It works by infusing ions of silver directly into the glass

Smartphones go everywhere with us, and they pick up germs from all the dirty surfaces we set them on (not to mention the germs from our hands and faces as we use them daily). In other words, our smartphones are gross -- but Corning has a solution.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014, which is being held in Las Vegas this week, Corning showed off its new Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass 3, which keeps your smartphone screen nice and clean.

According to Corning, it works by infusing ions of silver directly into the chemically-strengthened glass. Silver is a common antibacterial agent used in hospitals, and while it's an expensive antibacterial solution in that setting, Corning kept costs down by folding the ions into the glass -- keeping the cost of raw materials down below 50 cents per smartphone.

Corning, which touted the new glass as the first of its kind, said it can wipe out up to 99.9 percent of certain bacteria.

“Corning’s Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass inhibits the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi, and bacteria because of its built-in antimicrobial property, which is intrinsic to the glass and effective for the lifetime of a device,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials. “This innovation combines best-in-class antimicrobial function without compromising Gorilla Glass properties. Our specialty glass provides an excellent substrate for engineering antimicrobial and other functional attributes to help expand the capabilities of our Corning Gorilla Glass and address the needs of new markets.”

Gorilla Glass is some tough stuff doing cool things. Last year, Corning said Gorilla Glass could lower vehicle weight and improve fuel economy
