Corvette and other Chevy models to get 4G LTE modem this year
GM has detailed a very interesting feature that is available in the 2015
. The Corvette Performance Data Recorder (PDR) has the ability to capture video, audio, and telemetry data while the driver is on the racetrack.
The 720p resolution video the car can record can be reviewed in the car when parked and downloaded to a PC for sharing via social media. The data can also be uploaded with the Cosworth Toolbox telemetry software that is similar to the software used by Corvette Racing.
“The Performance Data Recorder combines the ability to record and share drive videos with the power of a professional-level motorsports telemetry system,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “Drivers can easily record and share their experiences driving down the Tail of the Dragon or lapping Road Atlanta. In addition, with the included telemetry software, users can analyze their laps in incredible detail and find opportunities to improve their driving and lap times.”
PDR will be available closer to the start of regular production for the 2015 model year Corvette, which is set for later in Q3 2014. The PDR system includes an HD camera mounted in the windshield header trim. It records the driver point of view and picks up audio using a dedicated mic in the cabin.
The telemetry recorder has a dedicated GPS receiver operating at 5Hz making it five times faster than the GPS receiver in the vehicle’s navigation system. The telemetry system is hard wired into the car giving it access to details like gear selection, braking force, RPM, and steering wheel angle. A track mode adds a map of the track, g-force, and lap time.
Video shot with the camera is recorded to a dedicated SD card slot in the glove box making for easy transfers. GM says that a 32GB card will be able to record about 800 minutes of video.
General Motors has also announced that drivers will be able to get high-speed data via a 4G LTE modem in some Chevy automobiles later this summer. The LTE service will come via an OnStar 4G LTE connection. The vehicles that will initially have LTE connectivity include the 2015 Stingray, Impala, Malibu, and Volt. The service will enable a 4G LTE hotspot inside the vehicle for various devices to connect to the web on the go.

Any new car has one. For almost the past decade.
I'm not disagreeing with you but short of driving a car from before 2000 (and even then its not guaranteed) for the rest of your life, you have no options.

Nothing wrong with driving an older car. Keep "Law Enforcement" happy if you want. I'll keep my 1994 GMC Suburban K1500 with NO boxes that they can use. Well, that's not quite true. I can plug a laptop into my transmission controller and record data if I want. But I don't generally drive around with that hooked up.
Of course, the first time one of these cameras records "Law Enforcement" blatantly breaking the law, as they are wont to do, and is admitted as evidence in court, you can expect Our Betters to frown on their use. Just as Russian leaders and their enablers are not happy about the proliferation of dashcams in THEIR country, since those cameras routinely catch the rampant corruption by THEIR "Law Enforcement".
