CES 2014: LaCie Introduces 1TB Spherical External HDD for $490

Nearly $500 for a 1TB USB 3.0 HDD? Sure, why not!
Storage is relatively cheap these days, especially if we’re talking about disk-based storage solutions. You can routinely find external 1TB hard drives for under $100, or even below $50 if you manage to secure a good deal.
However, LaCie isn’t interested in providing a value proposition with its latest external hard drive — it’s selling what it considers to be a work of art. The new LaCie Sphère is designed by Christofle and encloses the hard drive in silver-plated steel. The highly polished, highly reflective surface makes the LaCie Sphère quite an attention grabber.
“The shape of the globe inspired the design concept for the LaCie Sphère. The sensual and strong silhouette naturally led us to the product name,” said Thierry Oriez, President and CEO of Christofle. “We combined our obsession with the reflection of silver with LaCie’s technical expertise to create a hard drive that exudes elegance and sophistication like no other.”
When you take away the fancy polished housing, the LaCie Sphère is just a standard, run of the mill 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive. So don’t expect to see any wickedly fast performance numbers to match its enormous price tag. And we do mean enormous — $490 is the price of entry for this “work of art”.
The LaCie Sphère will be available later this month.

The genius was adding the grave accent.
I think the brainstorming sessions went something like:
Hmm, it looks like a ball... kind of orbish... almost like a 3D circle. What's that called again?
Yes! I love it! But "Sphere" is too pedestrian... too vulgar.
How about "Sphère."
Is that French? or Italian? Sounds exotic and expensive.
I don't know... I just made it up.
Amazing! We should call the weatherman... cuz it's gunna be raining' MUNAY!!!!!
