He said gamers will see changes in the operating system

A Microsoft executive recently said that gamers could expect the Xbox One to change and improve over time the way the Xbox 360 did, likely hoping that this will encourage more customers to buy the console. 
 
According to Canada.com, Microsoft’s director of programming for Xbox Live, Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson), said that the company is committed to improving Xbox One's operating system to make it increasingly user-friendly.
 
“If you look back at the Xbox 360′s launch, what it was in 2005 when it launched is completely different from what it is now," said Hryb. "It’s fascinating to see the different things that have come along. Things iterated. We didn’t even have things like the party system or the ability to support external storage when we launched the Xbox 360. So we are absolutely committed to adding new features to the Xbox One over the course of its life span."
 
Some aspects of the Xbox One's OS is more difficult than they should be, such as pinning favorite applications or finding out how full the Xbox One’s hard drive is. There have also been complaints about the Kinect's voice commands being too challenging to remember. 
 
Hryb went on to say that Microsoft is paying close attention to what gamers want via feedback, which can be found on sites like playerfeedback.net

“When we look back and look at what we’ve done, we want to continue to adapt the system to what gamers want," said Hryb. "The team that works on Xbox are gamers themselves. We want to build the system that we use and that we know gamers would enjoy using.
 
“We’re going to continue to refine the system and make it what the Xbox fans are expecting and what they want. We’re listening to the feedback every single day. I’ve already seen some changes in the operating system internally with what we’re building.”
 
The Xbox One console has had a pretty rough start. Before it even launched in November 2013, Microsoft announced a used games ban (which allowed third-party publishers to ban used Xbox One games) and the new "always-on" digital rights management (DRM) system. Microsoft later retracted these features after major complaints from the gaming community.
 
Xbox One has also been criticized for its price, which is $100 more than the PlayStation 4s (and that's largely because Kinect 2.0 is bundled in with the console, and not many gamers were happy about that as well).

Both consoles are laughable, it's 2014 and both haven't had all games running at 1080P.

Microsoft took a gamble with the Ram, they opted for more slower memory.

Sony also took a gamble, originally they were going to employ 4Gb of GDDR5 (Less but faster memory), but higher density chips were released before the consoles launched which made the move a sensible and possible choice.

Microsoft then tried to compensate for the slower DRAM by throwing eSRAM into the mix, the problem with that though is it costs obscene amounts of transistors to implement... Transisters that would have otherwise been better spent towards extra GPU resources such as Pixel pipelines, Render Output Pipelines, Texture Mapping units, Geometry engines... You name it.

Basically, Sony's gamble paid off.

However the main thing to keep in mind though is that cross platform game engines such as CryEngine and Unreal Engine aren't going to be pushing any platforms maximum potential, which is what the majority of the games will be built from, we saw it last generation where even towards the end of the generation developers were still pushing out horrible looking games powered by Unreal and they all looked like molasses. (Mass Effect 3 rings a bell, although great gameplay.)
I expect no different this next generation, only the first party developers like 343 industries and Naughty Dog will do anything *really* amazing from an image quality standpoint.

Anyway, enough about the decrepit gaming platforms that have severe disabilities in all things graphics...

Yes, both consoles are about as powerful as midrange PCs. Frankly there is no real reason that they can't run at 1080p. Resolution can be balanced vs detail on any console. If they required 1080p support it would be there, the level of detail would just be lower. The current batch of games is a bunch of rushed ports that have barely been optimized for either system.

What this really means is that not only are current high-end gaming PCs much more powerful than the new consoles, in the near future even bargain-basement systems with integrated graphics will be more powerful. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that it's fully possible that we'll see a phone more powerful than the PS4 within the next 5-10 years.

You don't have to be smug about it.

You think Mass Effect looked bad? Whoa.

I thought they did a great job with a sparse design style. Lots of smooth surfaces (including characters *cough* Miranda) so you can't argue the graphics were very detailed, but I thought the game was beautiful.

And it ran brilliantly on my 3-year-old laptop at 1080P.
