Verizon and Sprint are targets, too

AT&T is looking to poach T-Mobile customers by offering hundreds of dollars to make the switch. 

According to AT&T, it will give T-Mobile customers up to $450 per line to switch over to its network. Part of this consists of a $200 credit for every line brought over from T-Mobile, which can be used by customers who switch, activate a phone/buy a new one at full price, and select a Next plan.

The other portion is made up with promotion cards worth up to $250 for every smartphone trade-in, and this credit can only be put toward certain AT&T products or to pay your wireless bill. The amount on the card is determined by the type of phone traded in, its age and the shape its in.

While T-Mobile is the main target, AT&T is also going after Verizon and Sprint in a smaller effort to steal customers. Verizon and Sprint customers who switch to AT&T are eligible for a $100 minimum trade-in when choosing a Next plan and pay a low price of $25 per smartphone on Mobile Share Value plans. 

However, AT&T is hitting T-Mobile the hardest likely because of rumors that T-Mobile will announce a similar offer against AT&T at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next week. 

It's amusing to see the two competing so fiercely, considering AT&T tried to acquire T-Mobile back in 2011 for $39 billion. However, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) worried about anticompetitive issues surrounding the acquisition and it was killed off in late 2011. AT&T paid T-Mobile $3 billion in cash for the failed attempt. 

AT&T's new offerings for T-Mobile customers begins January 3, for those tempted to switch.

Nice try. Unless they offer truly unlimited talk, text and LTE data for $70 a month without capping and without contract, there is no incentive to switch.

I don't see why anyone would want to get rid of their new phone for only $250. They could resell it for much more.

The $200 for switching a line might be tempting for T-Mobile/Sprint users who need the better reception, but it wouldn't save them any money.

Even $70 is too much - and we both know that bill is actually over $80 after all is said and done. That's ridiculous.

Flat rate service is far superior in cost and offers the same service. T-Mobile and ATT can die as far as consumer service is concerned and they will - they will simply end up leasing service to the flat rate providers like Virgin Mobile, Republic Wireless, etc.

Name one company that does truly unlimited LTE data for less then that. No throttling of speed after 2.5GB, no capping and fees. Name ONE and I'll switch today.
