Atlanta wants people to stop peeing in its elevators

Atlanta has an odorific problem with people urinating in the elevators used in the city train stations. Some people describe the smell of the elevators as akin to a Porta-John that you might see at an outdoor concert.

"The smell hits you so bad. You hold your breath just to hurry up and get off the elevator," said Alicia Porter, a rider on a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train.

To help stop people from urinating in the elevators, MARTA has installed a urine detection system in the elevators. That system includes sensors that are able to detect urine and a camera to catch the offender literally with their pants down.

The sensors alert MARTA police who are able to respond immediately and catch the offender in the act. The transit system currently has 111 elevators, and one offender has already been caught.

While the efforts to catch habitual urinators are admirable, the system doesn’t come cheap. The urine detection system reportedly costs about $10,000 per elevator.

Since you are obviously not familiar with how politics works in the greater Atlanta area (or anything else for that matter), allow me to educate you a little...

quote:
If the transit system in Atlanta is so bad and you are being forced to use it, why are you not complaining to your city council to fix it?

Because I don't live inside the city limits of Atlanta and they aren't a part of my district elections. And nobody is FORCED to use it. If anything, the further OUT of Atlanta you get, the more the people OPPOSE it (MARTA has both bus and train routes 20+ miles outside of downtown ATL). Further, the further north you go, the emptier both the trains and the buses are.

quote:
if your view is common for most of the people that live in Atlanta, why not run for council yourself

As a white Conservative Republican male, I have about as much chance of running for (let alone winning) a position on Atlanta's city council as Al Sharpton does in the Tea Party. And if you REALLY want to piss people off, just tell them you'll raise their taxes to support a "better" MARTA that they want no part of it. As if those clowns running MARTA are competent enough to even handle it in the first place.

Waa, Waaa, Waaaa! I don't like public transit! Public Transit is full of drunks and lowlifes! Poor people ride transit and I DON'T LIKE IT!!!

Yeah, I get it - you don't like your transit system. You've poked holes into why it is such a bad thing. How would you fix it? How would you make it better yet still accessible by those that NEED it to get to and from their piss-poor paying jobs? What are you doing about it beyond sitting at your computer screen and making excuses why you haven't done squat about it.

Look here sport - I'm not paying ONE RED CENT more in my local taxes to support MORE MARTA expenditures where ridership and participation DECREASES DRAMATICALLY the further you get OUTSIDE of DOWNTOWN.

And that's irrespective of how WASTEFUL the clowns at MARTA are with what they have for funds NOW. To the tune of $50 MILLION during the last major audit in 2010. And guess what? It wasn't DEMOCRAT politicians that called for that audit, either. MARTA is run by a bunch of cronies and hacks and that will NOT change.

I get so sick and tired of YOU people telling OTHERS what THEY should do! A lot of us want NOTHING to do with MARTA and we will NOT SHUT UP about it either. And in case the point still hasn't made it through your cranium, participation on MARTA trains and buses RAPIDLY declines the further out from downtown ATL you get.
