Atlanta wants people to stop peeing in its elevators

Atlanta has an odorific problem with people urinating in the elevators used in the city train stations. Some people describe the smell of the elevators as akin to a Porta-John that you might see at an outdoor concert.

"The smell hits you so bad. You hold your breath just to hurry up and get off the elevator," said Alicia Porter, a rider on a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train.

To help stop people from urinating in the elevators, MARTA has installed a urine detection system in the elevators. That system includes sensors that are able to detect urine and a camera to catch the offender literally with their pants down.

The sensors alert MARTA police who are able to respond immediately and catch the offender in the act. The transit system currently has 111 elevators, and one offender has already been caught.

While the efforts to catch habitual urinators are admirable, the system doesn’t come cheap. The urine detection system reportedly costs about $10,000 per elevator.

Why in the world would someone pee in an elevator?

Also, when the system catches someone, they don't have to call the police. All they have to do is lock the elevator doors, engage the heaters and shaking motors, and get paid ad money on YouTube for the footage.

You've never been on MARTA, have you? I have. They do their damndest to piss off the people riding the trains. I guess some go the next step...

Okay, okay, in all seriousness. Downtown Atlanta might be a complicated mire of nonsensical streets, it does have one standard--don't ever go south of Ponce De Leon Avenue. If you do, you better be packing heat. The area of town south of there is a cesspool. There are still some okay spots, but for the most part, it is pretty bad. Atlanta is full of poverty and underprivledged people but I'm willing to bet the ones pissing on the elevators are either the crazies (I've seen 'em on the train and stations and when they go off... holy crap. It can be pretty scary) or the homeless. We've got a large homeless population here.

I've only been to Atlanta a few times, but I do remember like 9 out of 10 streets being named Peachtree.

I loved what they did at my home town, one of the +500y old churches in town got used all the time to piss at, and it was rotting away the stones.

What they did was they chiseled away the cement between stones at 50cm/20" height from the ground, put in a cobber wire, and covered it whit some porous cement.

And then connected the wire to a electric cattle fence, it dose not mater how drunk you are, you learn your lesson the first time you do it. ^_^

That's a creative idea and an inexpensive feedback mechanism requiring no new laws or enforcers. But don't you then also have the problem of cleaning up the resulting fecal matter?

You don't shit your self just because your electrify your dick, and even if you do, all guys ware pants, so worse that happens they also shit there pants.

When it just was installed i actually saw the system in action, next to pain, the laughing is also fairly humiliating I think, as it was real entertaining to watch people walk/run away in shame. ^_^

Wait, you're saying this is a true story and the system actually worked?

There was a Mythbusters on this (peeing on electrified railroad tracks) and it turns out that the pea stream always breaks up in flight. Unless you're equipped with a ridiculously large urethra, there's never a conducting path from your penis to the ground.

Yeah it works, like i said, they put up the wire at 20"/50cm thats ware stream is still has not broken up.

Actually you dont need much to have a path with high voltage, but even if you dont have a path, your body will still act like a compensator and have enough mass to give you a shock.

Just like with static electricity, only because its generated it got a bid mere oomph to it.

You know I'm honestly shocked (no pun) they would do that. It doesn't take much voltage to harm a person or cause your heart to stop.

And what happens when it rains and that wall is soaking wet and some unsuspecting person puts their hand on it?

That's just such an extreme solution to the problem...

It dose actually, and the power has also have to run true the hart, what it wont do here.

Next to that, I think you right, thats why almost non of those cattle farmers use it, as dead cattle is a real problem with those fences.

They also properly did not ask a doctor what the risk was of real physical harm, as even do lawsuits outcome and settlement are not as crazy as in the US, it would properly still be a problem on the churches balance book.

quote:
And what happens when it rains and that wall is soaking wet and some unsuspecting person puts their hand on it?

First of i think most of the power would be drained of by the grounding effect that you would have, next to that a rain censor would fix that problem easily.

quote:
That's just such an extreme solution to the problem...

I find it a brilliant solution, as 2 weeks after they installed it, the urine smell was gone, and literally no one ignores the no pissing sign with the electric lightning bolt.

like we say in Holland, "even a donkey would not hurt him self twice on the same stone".

I would guess that because A. Public restrooms don't exist or B. The elevators are cleaner/safer then the public restrooms.

it's A. They won't put any in.
People ride MARTA to see the Braves at baseball (not anymore, sold to Cobb County wanted new stadium), NFL Falcons games, Hawks basketball. What do you do at these games? You drink. Lots.
So why are there no restrooms?

Back when my freshly-arrived immigrant family was poor and on Welfare/AFDC (and I was just a kid), we used public transport a lot. We couldn't afford a car and car insurance, anyway. Glad we could get around, though: we were able to shop, go to school, go to our minimum-wage part-time jobs, visit relatives, my father got trained up for his first real job at a local Community College... fast-forward a couple decades, and we're a successful upper-middle-class family.

It would've all been much harder to pull off without public assistance, and without public transport. But go ahead, call me and my family "low life riffraff!": no skin off my nose, since it's coming form a total douche nozzle whose opinion I've learned by now to value not at all...

And when you "resist public transportation being pushed everywhere", you think you're only impacting that tiny minority again, and not everyone who needs and uses public transportation?

But as i was saying it was over 20y ago, so cant tell how it is and looks now, and in Texas ware i often come i can use a company car, to go to town, as we have a company guest house 5min walk from work, so again no help, and one town is a to small a sample make a general conclusion.

I read nothing racial at all. I live in the greater metro ATL area and avoid MARTA at all costs BECAUSE of the "riff raff" that's on them...of ALL races (and the amount of car break-ins/thefts at the MARTA train station parking lots). Seems to me the only people out there who see race in ANYTHING they don't agree with is the modern regressive liberal Democrat left who gets butt hurt every time truth is spoken and they attempt to trot out the racist cart in pathetic attempts to shut someone up. If the transit system in Atlanta is so bad and you are being forced to use it, why are you not complaining to your city council to fix it? You voted for them. If they aren't doing the job, vote in someone that will. After all that is the American way.

But from what I can see of this article here, it seems they are at least trying to do something about it. So instead of ragging on the transit system, why not help your city government fix it. Attend the council meetings and provide input - they are after all open to the public for this very reason. Hell, if your view is common for most of the people that live in Atlanta, why not run for council yourself so you can get it on the city's agenda and see for yourself what the realities are for getting improvements in place (i.e. raising taxes to pay for it)?

He dropped his own life into politics when he responded with this :

Seemed to me he was looking for an argument that didn't have something to do with race then brought the politics into it himself.

He wanted a response that had nothing to do with race. He also said he is experiencing this himself and complaining about it. So let's DO bring political views into this.

Seems you conservative righties do like to complain about the social infrastructures that are in place. However I don't see you doing or even suggesting what can be done to actually fix them. Is that what it means to be "conservative"? To sit back and go Wah! Wah! Wah! and hope the liberals come back and fix it for you?

I made a general statement once before on another topic that "if you are not a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem" and you got your nose out of joint over it. Yet I don't see that I am being proven wrong here. How is this transit thing any different?

Since you are obviously not familiar with how politics works in the greater Atlanta area (or anything else for that matter), allow me to educate you a little...

quote:
If the transit system in Atlanta is so bad and you are being forced to use it, why are you not complaining to your city council to fix it?

Because I don't live inside the city limits of Atlanta and they aren't a part of my district elections. And nobody is FORCED to use it. If anything, the further OUT of Atlanta you get, the more the people OPPOSE it (MARTA has both bus and train routes 20+ miles outside of downtown ATL). Further, the further north you go, the emptier both the trains and the buses are.

quote:
if your view is common for most of the people that live in Atlanta, why not run for council yourself

As a white Conservative Republican male, I have about as much chance of running for (let alone winning) a position on Atlanta's city council as Al Sharpton does in the Tea Party. And if you REALLY want to piss people off, just tell them you'll raise their taxes to support a "better" MARTA that they want no part of it. As if those clowns running MARTA are competent enough to even handle it in the first place.

How would you make it better yet still accessible by those that NEED it to get to and from their piss-poor paying jobs? What are you doing about it beyond sitting at your computer screen and making excuses why you haven't done squat about it.

RE: You're Sh*tting Me!

Look here sport - I'm not paying ONE RED CENT more in my local taxes to support MORE MARTA expenditures where ridership and participation DECREASES DRAMATICALLY the further you get OUTSIDE of DOWNTOWN.

And that's irrespective of how WASTEFUL the clowns at MARTA are with what they have for funds NOW. To the tune of $50 MILLION during the last major audit in 2010. And guess what? It wasn't DEMOCRAT politicians that called for that audit, either. MARTA is run by a bunch of cronies and hacks and that will NOT change.

I get so sick and tired of YOU people telling OTHERS what THEY should do! A lot of us want NOTHING to do with MARTA and we will NOT SHUT UP about it either. And in case the point still hasn't made it through your cranium, participation on MARTA trains and buses RAPIDLY declines the further out from downtown ATL you get.

I know this might be a difficult concept for other cultures, but trust me, public transportation isn't preferred here for the above reasons and more.

omfg Reclaimer, what is wrong with you? LOL You sound like a freaking south baptist minister on his pulpit. How on earth do you get around?

You realize that criminals more often than not do their thing in cars? Rapists don't rape their victims on a crowded bus. Nor do drug dealers or bank robbers. Someone breaking into your house is gonna haul your stuff off to the pawnshop in a van.

Would you rather the drunks drove their own cars home from the bar? Most of them DO have cars. After all, you can buy a running car for a couple hundred bucks (I bought one once for $100 and a two-four of beer and I was dirt poor at the time).

And yes, I've seen $500/hr layers get shitfaced and take a bus or taxi home.

I know that most people living in cities don't like public transit. But believe me, if you took away public transit everything you are blaming on public transit would become 10x worse. Guaranteed.

If some lowlife riffraff gets caught being drunk and pissing in an elevator, he gets busted. Lowlife riffraff gets caught being drunk and driving his car he gets busted too.

Any large metropolitan city absolutely demands public transit. The Toronto area has millions of riders every day. Even with that the streets of Toronto are crowded with bikes, cars & trucks. Imagine what it would be like with no public transit.

So I'm not seeing your point on why this makes transit such a bad thing.
