Samsung merges divisions and shakes up executive ranks

The lines between smartphones, tablets, and digital cameras are being further blurred with each new gadget release. Many of the smartphones on the market today are capable of replacing point and shoot cameras in functionality and image quality.

In an effort to help leverage synergies between its wireless operations and imaging divisions, Samsung has announced an in-house merger. Samsung has merged its Digital Imaging Business Division and its Wireless Business Division. Samsung hopes the move will help it capture a bigger chunk of the global mirrorless camera market by 2015. Samsung announced the reorganization of divisions on December 11.

Samsung Electronics explained, “We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones.”

There is no word on when the first product from the newly merged wireless and camera divisions of Samsung will debut. However, the company already has some whacky “combo” products on the market such as the Android-powered Galaxy S4 Zoom.

People who care about taking good pictures with their phones buy Nokias anyway, but maybe this means Samsung is taking that market more seriously now.
