Expect auto-playing commercials soon

If you are a user of Facebook, you have probably posted links to video on sites like Instagram or at least have seen them on your newsfeed. To get those videos to play, you currently have to click on the play buttons.
However, Facebook has announced that it will be rolling out a new auto-play feature for videos to all mobile users. Facebook said, "We’re continuing a wider rollout of in-line video on web."
You can bet the idea behind this wasn’t only to make it easier to see the videos your friends share, but to usher in video ads that play automatically. The auto-play videos will mark the first time that moving content has been available by default without having to click play on the News Feed.
Auto-play will reportedly work for videos uploaded directly to Facebook or shared via Instagram. The videos will now play as soon as you scroll over them. They will also continue to play as you move through your feed. The catch is that the sound won't play until you click or tap the video.
Facebook tested the new auto-play feature on the web with a small group of users in September. It is now rolling out to all iOS and Android users even though auto-play ads were tipped to be delayed until 2014.

Worst idea ever!

There is nothing I hate more (online) than websites that auto play videos, ANY video. It drives me insane and I avoid sites that do this. I wish browsers came with an option to stop this and allow videos to play only on demand.

Video ads are the worst. If they play on a page I REALLY want to see, I will turn down the volume and either scroll away or go to another window while it plays. I absolutely refuse to watch/hear these ads. I am not against advertising in general, just intrusive advertising. I think tasteful static banner ads can be amazing effective and non-intrusive.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm glad I don't use Facebook anymore.

There are addons/extensions to Firefox (probably chrome/opera also) that give this ability.

No Script and Ad Block work pretty well.
