All game choices are download titles

Both of the recently released next generation game consoles, the Xbox One and the PS4, have suffered hardware issues. Some Xbox One consoles have damaged game discs inserted into the drive slot, while the PS4 console has suffered from what is being called the Blue Light of Death.

Microsoft is trying to make it up to gamers who purchased Xbox One consoles that had hardware issues by giving them a free download code for a game. Anyone who purchased a faulty Xbox One console will be able to get a free game from four choices according to Polygon.

The four choices include Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome or Zoo Tycoon. The games are being offered as a free download, so even machines suffering from a defective optical drive will be able to play the games.

"While a replacement console is on its way, we want to ensure our advance exchange customers can stay in the game," a statement from Microsoft said. "We will provide each of them with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft Studios."

Microsoft continues to maintain that there were issues with a very small number of consoles so far. Microsoft has also promised to "take care" of customers that purchase faulty consoles.

It's a whole hell of a lot better than Sony's deal who not only told customers with defective hardware that they must wait 2-3 weeks for a new console but the. Tried to up sell them a 2 year hardware warranty on top of the insult! At least MS is throwing in something free and let's you play a game rather than have a giant paperweight like a PS4 with BLOD. It sucks in both situations but it sounds like MS is being more supportive.

Microsoft out servicing Sony for the first time in their lives, could this be the turning point?
No.

Well then you will just have to wait till hackers steal your personal information multiple times from Sony so you can get free PS4 games.

You can also get the destroyed disc replaced, just contact the manufacturer.

Good luck with that.

Even if they do decide to exchange it, you're going to have to mail it to them and they will then send you the replacement after verifying it as a valid purchase.

You could have beat the game in 8 hours but it may take a week or two to get it exchanged.

As far as the consoles go - why isn't anyone just taking them back to place of purchase? It's not like it's out of warranty. Let the retailers deal with it. If they don't have any replacements in stock ask for a refund; have them call their other stores to see if they have one in stock. Sure, that one may eat the disk too, so it's probably best to check any new units with a DVD movie you absolutely hate and could care less if it gets destroyed. Or just install a blank disc in - if it comes up with an error and spits it out - you're good to go.

Lame ass game or not it's not like there is a boatload of options right now, they are offering the majority of the launch titles, not bad considering.

That's because unlike the Xbox, people are actually buying PS4's at a good clip. Sony can't magically make them appear out of thin air on your doorstep when the demand is THIS high.

You know what, after Microsoft's last disaster with the RROD, I'm getting a little tired of hearing how "good" they handle the failures. Hey, here's a radical idea, spend the extra 2 cents for foam pads on the BluRay drive so you DON'T have to fix problems later?

Unlike the Xbox? Where are you getting your numbers from? Both consoles have sole roughly the same amount, both are sold out, both are hard to get. I understand Sony can't just get new consoles into the hands of those with defective ones but the wait time is still a pain and Sony didn't offer anything for the trouble or the wait.
Sony has had a LOT of problems with their products from installed DRM to hacked servers and faulty hardware but they never go out of their way to make things right. Yes MS messes up too but since they created the fund to help those with RROD 360's they have been supportive in every way when it comes to ther customers, something Sony has still not learned.

I don't know... Sony's problem is not destroying disks, so even if I have to wait 2 weeks... I will have my game disks fine.

MS's problem is destroying disks, so you need console replacement AND game disk replacement. I see that more severe than Sony's problem, so it makes sense that MS has to do more in return.

And I don't think it is enough. They should really replace damaged disk with the same one.

I have to agree.

I bought a PS4 and it works great... I've had no problems with it. However, if i'd gotten a defective unit it would be nice to have gotten some sort of "good will" offering from Sony.

Good for M$ for at least throwing them a bone (or XBOne as it is). Sony should be doing the same for those who have gotten defective PS4s.

I know this wouldn't be what happens during a normal purchase of electronics (say a defective TV or receiver or something). But, these are people (myself included) who took a leap of faith on a pre-order of a system and it would certainly go a long way to making people not feel screwed by their chosen system provider.

Again, good for M$ for doing at least *something*.

(disclaimer: I write code in Microsoft tech all day, every day... so I have a love/hate relationship with M$)

This isn't true my ps4 came back in 8 days not even close to 2-3 weeks, Sony is using 2d shipping all directions for launch PS4's with issues.
