Hardware Intel Slips In Sub-9W "Yonah"

Intel adds one more ultra-low voltage "Yonah"

Intel's U2500 Core Duo Yonah processor was released just a few weeks ago.  The chip marked Intel's first attempt at a dual-core ultra low-wattage CPU, and has thus far made quite a splash in the x86 world.  So much so that Intel has decided to release an even lower wattage version, the U2400.

The dual-core 65nm Yonah-based U2400 features a 1.06GHz clock frequency, a 533MHz front-side bus and 2MB of shared L2 cache.  Intel has not released TDP specifics of the new processor, but the TDP of the 1.2GHz Core Duo U2500 was a mere 9 Watts.  During normal operation the U2500 uses less than a Watt.

Dell and Fujitsu already have ultraportable (sub-3lb) models slated for the U2500, and it would not be a large stretch to assume the U2400 will also show up in these notebooks as well.   The U2400 is expected to sell for $262 to distributors on September 3, 2006.

If only the graphics card companies could bring out an equally low powered chip to go along with this cpu. Come on ATI, how hard could it be to get a 9600 pro into the low wattage realm?

from what I understand, the next generation of GPU's will be far more power consumption oriented than the previous trend, so I believe they are working on it...

Not from what has been shown so far... from Anandtech's article from Computex, there were whisperings of 300W GPUs. If that's power-efficient, then beam me up. Granted, once more GPUs are built on 80 and 65 nm processes, this should help the entry level immensely, even if the top-end parts are becoming a bit top-heavy (we've already seen GPUs rocket past CPUs in transistor counts, the question will be when they start giving Montecito a run for its big-iron money).

From what I've heard the first DX10 chips will be power hogs, but after that they'll tone the power consumption down. That's the plan, anyways ::shakes head::

Who cares about *those cards* if you are looking at a 1.06GHz processor?

Just because the high end will have increased power consumption doesn't mean the mid range/low end has to. Getting a 9600 or something into the low wattage real should be possible, even if they are pushing power consumption at the high end.

I would like to see a reasonably pricesd low power machine really, instead of one with the huge premiums over other machines.

the thing is, video cards as a whole are too power hungry [;

you buy amd/intel 65watt cpus and couple them with some gfx card, and all these talks about power saving is thrown out of the window.Not to mention nvidia's new 570/590 chipset.

...but at the same time, sounds pretty impressive. Wonder what happens when Intel starts having Merom encroach on this ULV territory :)
