The phone can also be flattened without damage

LG Electronics, Inc.'s (KSC:066570) "G Flex" smartphone has an admittedly impressive spec, but some have been somewhat put off by its curved design, which critics call a "gimmick".

But in a new video LG shows that its smartphone might be a little more impressive than early criticisms would have you believe.  It shows that the phone can be literally flattened by a 32 kg (70.5 lb weight).  

While this is likely a necessity for all curved smartphones given that their users might sit on them, what's even more impressive is the self-healing scratch test, which shows a robotic wire-bristle test setup heals scratches first at 500g (1.1 lbs) of pressure then at 750g (1.65 lbs) of pressure.

LG has unfortunately offered no details of exactly how its new phone accomplishes this remarkable feat, but speculation based on peer-reviewed research suggest that it may be using some sort of microcapsule technology, which fils cracks by bursting tiny pellets of adhesive polymer.


Similar polymers have appeared in certain automakers paints and in third party accessory cases for smartphones.  Again, there's been a general industry-wide silence as to how these are working, although the presumption is that some sort of microcapsule or hydrogen-bonding based healing strategy is employed.
