Pricing not yet announced for the service which is provided by AT&T

GM has announced that it has teamed up with AT&T to give customers internet access inside most of its 2015 model year vehicles (courtesy of an LTE modem). The partnership will allow AT&T customers add their vehicle as a device on a new or existing AT&T data plan.
 
The plan will also allow owners of LTE modem equipped vehicles to purchase access on an “as needed” basis, similar to what AT&T already allows with tablets such as Apple’s iPad.


Mom's daily ride will now give the kiddos internet access on the way to soccer practice
 
GM VP of Global Connected Consumer said during the Barclays Global Automotive Conference, "So we’re trying to make this as flexible as possible and as easy as possible to get the customer used to buying data connections inside of their vehicles."
 
GM and AT&T haven't announced pricing for the service, which is expected to be available in mid-2014. It should also be noted that the integrated AT&T service won't replace GM's OnStar service.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense to me either. Chances are, everyone in the car over the age of 10 probably has a smartphone anyway. And I'm sure that most can figure out how to tether if they have a laptop/tablet onboard.

So that the car can use internet services like google maps, pandora radio, get weather updates, real time traffic updates without having to come up with either a complicated system of a specialized app on the phone for each of those things and software in the car, or requiring phone purchasers to buy a mobile hotspot plan for their phones.

Some of those things are available over satellite with sirrus xm radio, but the plans suck, and the bandwidth sucks.

I know it might be difficult to believe, but not everyone has a smart phone. Even more difficult to believe, not everyone WANTS one.

I have considered it, numerous times over the past few years, and have yet to come up with a single compelling reason to switch from my current phone and prepaid plan, to a smart phone with a plan that will likely run me 10x more per month (and no, I'm NOT exaggerating that figure).

Unlike so many people these days, I'm not addicted to being able to talk/text/web/app every waking moment of my life. Not putting anyone down who does....just saying it's not for me, and betting that's the case for plenty of people.

Yeah, and I hate to be able find stores/restaurants and then navigate right to them.

You can still get a smart phone, and probably pay less than you do now, if you use Ting.

But this option is aimed at people who do, and very likely already have such service. And when you look at the cost of manufacturer installed GPS screens, it's about the most expensive way you could possibly get the service, and you're tied to that hardware for the life of the car. If you're leasing for 3 years, no big deal, but if you own for 10+, it makes no sense at all.
