Shortages expected for iPad mini with retina display

If you've been counting the days until you can get your hands on the new Apple iPad mini with Retina display, the tablet has officially launched. The iPad mini with the Retina Display brings the same resolution from the 9.7-inch iPad (2048x1536) to a smaller 7.9-inch device.

We already know all the hardware features of the iPad mini with Retina display. The tablet will use an Apple A7 processor featuring a 64-bit desktop-class architecture. All versions of the tablet will feature integrated Wi-Fi with versions offering LTE 4G connectivity available for $130 extra.

“The response to iPad Air has been incredible, and we’re excited for customers to experience the new iPad mini with Retina display,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We think customers will love both of these thin, light, powerful new iPads, and we’re working hard to get as many as we can in the hands of our customers.”

With Apple's comment that it is "working hard" to get the new iPad mini into the hands of customers, you can bet there will be a shortage of this tablet early on. The basic Wi-Fi version of the iPad mini with Retina display and 16 GB of storage will sell for $399, a 32 GB version sells for $499, and a 64 GB version sells for $599. People needing even more storage can get a 128 GB version for $699.

Versions of the iPad mini with Retina display featuring integrated LTE connectivity start at $529 for 16 GB of storage and go up to $829 for 128 GB of storage. With the new iPad mini with Retina display now available, the original iPad mini can be purchased for $299 with 16 GB of storage.

8inch not that portable

why on earth did they make it 8inch??? it is not portable at all. what were they thinking?
with the slimmer width of the 7inch nexus, i have no problem fitting that in the front pocket of my khakis to work or wherever

I dunno, its all about personal preferance... I think 8 inch is the perfect size. Just portable enough and just big enough. I have an N7 (2012 and now 2013) and love it, but if there were a Nexus 8 I would buy it in a heartbeat... And it looks like its coming.

The iPad mini fits in the front pocket of my jeans, I'm not sure what's wrong with your khakis?

In any case, it's been this size for a year now, so it's not like you should be surprised at this late hour.

Oh my, how big are your jeans? An 8 inch tablet does not fit in the front pocket of an average pair of jeans. Especially not easily or comfortably :S

Believe me, it really is a struggle to fit my 8 incher into my jeans, but it can be done.

Interesting. I can't really say, since I don't wear jeans, but I can't imagine that it's comfortable for very long, especially if you try and sit... Correct me if I'm wrong I guess.

It's definitely comfortable to sit... Unless I get excited. ;)

Yuu are STILL a blithering idiot that cant follow a simple conversation arent you ?You are so off base its not even funny. Some iDouche claimed I can afford Apple products when I get older... That I must be young and poor because I dont buy Apple products and cant afford them. I said I am doing fine, I have 2 homes and 2 kids one of which is in college and can still buy any iDevice I wanted, that it wasnt about money, its about value.

You are so ridiculous. You get banned for acting like an angry spiteful child, and rather than taking it in and contemplating why your behavior got you banned and how you could potentially not act like such a seeping douchebag, you come back with a new userid acting even worse. Your desperate need to spread your troll goo is so strong that you need to make an ass of yourself all over again? Really, you are pathetic. I strongly suggest you look at yourself and try to grow some as a human being. It will do you a world of good.

Exactly, seems the poorer one is the more kids they have. Gotta get that welfare/tax bonus...
I say its an inverse relationship.

Looking at the above replies I think he was referring to some random conversation between him and retrospooty that he probably also took out of context... Good thing we all keep up with all of his conversations so we knew exactly what he meant, right?

What kind of person puts a tablet computer in their front pants pocket?? Talk about awkward looking. "Is that a tablet in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

It is not that bad. It is more like putting a paperback book into the pocket.

I have no problem putting a Galaxy Note 8 into my pocket. Sure it is a tight fit, but doable. 7" is easier to fit, but 8" is much nicer for viewing content. So as long as it fits, no problem with that size.

Size is measured daigonally and the aspect is 4:3. Nexus 7 is 16:9 or 16:10. It is essentially the same size.

What on earth are you talking about.

The iPad Mini has almost 40% extra screen size.

RE: 8inch not that portable
By CZroe on 11/16/2013 11:45:12 PM , Rating: 2
Duh, but it's a completely different aspect ratio which keeps it in the same class of portability, which was my point.

RE: 8inch not that portable
By Harry Wild on 11/13/2013 4:00:50 PM , Rating: 2
All you have to do is stack them on top of one another to see the difference.

From your comment; I would have to think you must have failed basic math class: Area = length X width. LOL!

RE: 8inch not that portable
By CZroe on 11/17/2013 12:21:25 AM , Rating: 2
It sounds like you stopped at simple area and never moved on to Pythagorean theorem. We are dealing with a diagonal measurements from different aspect ratios. If the aspect ratio is different then you can have two different screen sizes at the same height, which is the largest dimension. The largest dimension is the primary dimension for determining portability class and the screen ultimately determines a tablets largest dimension.

Ignoring that the iPad mini and the Nexus 7 are both exactly 200mm in their largest dimension and, thus, are inarguably in the same class of portability, let's focus on their screens alone and compare:

First of all, iPad mini is closer to 7.8-inches than it is to 8-inches. It's often reported as 7.9-inches but that's already rounded up from 7.85-inches. Rounding up twice is not OK. I'll resist the urge to round down to 7.8 despite it being more justified than the twice-rounded up 8-inch figure that's been getting batted around here. Exactly 7.85-inches it is, then.

Now, with the 4:3 aspect ratio, that gives iPad mini a height of 15.9cm. The Nexus 7 with 16:10 aspect is 15.1cm tall. That's a 0.8cm difference. 3/10ths of an inch does not put it into a different class in anyone's definition. If the Nexus 7 were 16:9 like I originally thought it was, then the difference would be even half of that (0.4cm)!

As if your credibility wasn't already shattered by the total tablet sizes both being the same 200mm in their largest dimensions: "OMG! That 0.15-inch difference in screen height is so totally obvious when I stack them on top of one another!" *eyesroll*

Lern tu argue.
