It wants to sell 5 million PS4s by March 2014

Sony is betting big on its latest console with sales estimates of 3 million PlayStation 4s by the end of the year.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony predicts that it will sell 3 million PlayStation 4 units by the end of 2013, and 5 million units by March 2014.

“This is a marathon, not a sprint, but getting out to a nice start is a good thing to do,” said JackTretton, president and chief executive officer of Sony's U.S. computer entertainment division. “That hurdle has been cleared. We’re very, very confident we’re in great shape.”

Sony is hoping that the PS4 will have an advantage against its competition -- Microsoft's Xbox One -- with an earlier release date. The PlayStation 4 is set to release November 15 in the U.S. and November 29 in Europe at $399 while the Xbox One has a November 22 release date in the U.S. and is priced $100 higher than the PS4 at $499.

“We’re very comfortable with it,” said Tretton. “I’m excited about next week to be able to talk about what was sold as opposed to what we may sell.”

Last week, Amazon already had a warehouse full of PS4s ready to ship come release day. The image below was posted November 7 on the Facebook page Amazon Video Games

If the lower price and earlier release date aren't enough, Sony is also hoping the PS4's internals will draw more sales over the Xbox One. Last week, Wired posted a video that showed off the PS4's innards, and saw updates such as an x86 CPU architecture and an integrated power adapter.

The video breakdown also revealed a 500GB hard disk drive; 8GB of GDDR5 memory (eight on each side of the main processor for a total of 8GB); a secondary processor for network processing with low power consumption; two heat pipes for the heat sink; an 85-mm-diameter centrifugal fan, and ports for USB 3.0, Ethernet, HDMI, optical audio output and an AUX connector for the camera.

If you're still debating between the PS4 and an Xbox One, some Xbox One internals are an APU with eight x86-64 cores; 8GB of DDR3 RAM; a GPU based on an AMD GCN architecture (it just got a GPU bump to 853MHz, up from the previous 800MHz); a 500 GB non-replaceable hard drive; three USB 3.0 ports; HDMI, and a Blu-ray optical drive.

Will you be helping Sony reach its holiday sales goal of 3 million, or wait it out for the Xbox One?

Depends what you consider "this round." At launch, the PS3 was significantly more expensive at launch, yet today has sold a nearly identical number of units as the 360. I think the driving force this time around is going to come down to exclusives and what features the consoles have to target different audiences. The price is definitely going to be a huge factor this early in the game, but I think it'll become far less of an issue a year or two down the road.

Personally I don't have plans to buy either at launch, but I'll wait maybe a few months or a year to see if either one suits my needs. I will say I'd really like a next gen controller to hook up to my PC though. The xbox one controller is really nice, and the PS4 controller also looks like a substantial improvement on older models, and appears to have PC support.

At this point PS3 is leading worldwide, tho' US is still X360 bastion.

I'm not sure about features people mention. Being a console, most important feature for me are games, and PS3 is still receiving top quality exclusives - Last Of Us, Beyond, Ratchet & Clank, GT6 coming in 2 weeks time. I haven't spotted many exclusives on X360 lately.

I don't know how non-gaming features compare, I don't have X360. I do have HTPC in my living room, so I probably wouldn't be using media features on X360 anyway. I do use PS3 as BD player, what can I say? Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I do like physical media. You can collect it, you can receive it as a gift and give as a gift. And 1080 quality is guaranteed.

Re next gen... both machines are more than capable to cover all media-related features, and features will be added on both. It is hard to predict, maybe MS has better starting point in this, but Sony does have big presence in world of movies and music with their own studios, and with PSN pushing into paid service as well, I'm expecting PSN to raise their standards.

At the end, it will depend on individual needs and territory when it comes to extra features - NBA and NHL are not popular in Australia/NZ, for example, and I haven't heard anything about local customizations (rugby league features and such). Also... Sky Digital sat service is gold standard here - will XB1 somehow integrate with that as it does with cable in US?

While all this remains to be seen, one of the things pretty much set in stone is that PS4 does have more capable hardware, and it will show once developers reach hardware limits with their optimizations. I don't care for price difference - I'm planning console to be in use for at least 5 years, $100 more or less does not make much difference - but included hardware does.

So it's PS4 for me. Unfortunately first couple of batches are presold here in NZ, availability ETA in all shops I have checked at this point is late January to mid-February.

XB1 is available on release. Don't know if this means PS4 demand is that much higher here, or XB1 supply is that much better... or a bit of both. We'll see in a few months.

Yup, games are what define any platform. Its why I play games on Windows, iOS, Playstation, and Nintendo.

Sony has done an amazing job nurturing their studios over the last few years. Naughty Dog, That Game Company, Santa Monica Studio, Quantic Dream, etc etc. They have a great set of studios under them now.

Microsoft did the opposite, closing down or letting go of their internal studios. I think they realized their mistake because they recently dropped a lot of money on EA to make Titanfall a console exclusive rather than a timed exclusive.

Either way, the platform with the best exclusive library is the one that gets my money, and that isn't the XB1. Nintendo hardware gets Nintendo games, Sony has their studios, and the cross-platform stuff gets played on my PC.

XB1 has none of that. The fact that it has slower hardware while costing $100 more makes the decision SUPER easy. :)

Agreed. Life just would NOT be complete without a regular dose of Nintendo.

Yep. The Wii and Wii U may have been a bit underwhelming compared to the competition, but Nintendo tends to have quality games, even after the number of releases each one has had (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc).

I really feel like PC + Wii U is the best setup right now if you are limited to just one console.

The Wii U has games you can't get anywhere else and types of games using the tablet and Wii remote that you can't play anywhere else.

The PS4 is great, don't get me wrong, but until Naughty Dog and the other top tier Sony developers start releasing their new games then there isn't an urgent need to jump in.

Says the guy who has a PS4 shipping from Amazon right now :)

Wrong, Titanfall will be a Microsoft exclusive, it's available for PC as well :)

That's why I said "console exclusive", but I can see how that can be totally be misinterpreted.

It will be exclusive among consoles, but not among PC.

My plan has always been to get Titanfall from Origin. Again, PC is for cross-platform, no need for an XB1 if this is going to be the limit to their exclusive games. :)
