It wants to sell 5 million PS4s by March 2014

Sony is betting big on its latest console with sales estimates of 3 million PlayStation 4s by the end of the year.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony predicts that it will sell 3 million PlayStation 4 units by the end of 2013, and 5 million units by March 2014.

“This is a marathon, not a sprint, but getting out to a nice start is a good thing to do,” said JackTretton, president and chief executive officer of Sony's U.S. computer entertainment division. “That hurdle has been cleared. We’re very, very confident we’re in great shape.”

Sony is hoping that the PS4 will have an advantage against its competition -- Microsoft's Xbox One -- with an earlier release date. The PlayStation 4 is set to release November 15 in the U.S. and November 29 in Europe at $399 while the Xbox One has a November 22 release date in the U.S. and is priced $100 higher than the PS4 at $499.

“We’re very comfortable with it,” said Tretton. “I’m excited about next week to be able to talk about what was sold as opposed to what we may sell.”

Last week, Amazon already had a warehouse full of PS4s ready to ship come release day. The image below was posted November 7 on the Facebook page Amazon Video Games

If the lower price and earlier release date aren't enough, Sony is also hoping the PS4's internals will draw more sales over the Xbox One. Last week, Wired posted a video that showed off the PS4's innards, and saw updates such as an x86 CPU architecture and an integrated power adapter.

The video breakdown also revealed a 500GB hard disk drive; 8GB of GDDR5 memory (eight on each side of the main processor for a total of 8GB); a secondary processor for network processing with low power consumption; two heat pipes for the heat sink; an 85-mm-diameter centrifugal fan, and ports for USB 3.0, Ethernet, HDMI, optical audio output and an AUX connector for the camera.

If you're still debating between the PS4 and an Xbox One, some Xbox One internals are an APU with eight x86-64 cores; 8GB of DDR3 RAM; a GPU based on an AMD GCN architecture (it just got a GPU bump to 853MHz, up from the previous 800MHz); a 500 GB non-replaceable hard drive; three USB 3.0 ports; HDMI, and a Blu-ray optical drive.

Will you be helping Sony reach its holiday sales goal of 3 million, or wait it out for the Xbox One?

I dont know if I will buy yet... I am sure at some point I will, but it will be a PS4 because of the GPU. Both have plenty CPU. Looking at the last round, the weakpoint by a MILE is the GPU. That will be true of this round too. Using a mid range GPU at launch is fine, but 2-3 years from now it will be weak. The XBO is even weaker, especially at memory bandwidth.

I dunno though, I honestly hope that PC gaming keeps up with its comeback. I'd rather go back to 100% PC if the titles exist.

Im in on XBONE but that was probably expected from me.

Skype integration and camera will follow you around the room. (Software Tracking) That just makes it easy for everyone instead of sitting in front of the PC.

The ability to control TV programs with voice is a nice option especially since my in laws can never figure out the remote or recall what channel a show is on.

Wife and kids love Dance Central type games and Kinect for them is a must have.

I think both consoles are a bit underpowered and Im not convinced the PS4 titles wont have to be scaled back to 720p here and there because of frame rate issues.

Like I said I believe both consoles are under powered.

Im also going to look at doing a Steam Console based around a PC build I hear steam works well with an X Box 360 controller.

LOL, no really?

Nice try, but it's not the PS4, its the game, or more specifically sloppy coding. Its happening at 720 on the XBO.

I know someone who develops on both consoles and he said their game is up and running on both consoles at 1080p and looks better than Ghosts on both. This is just clearly the case of a rushed product for both consoles in an attempt to make it a launch title.

Absolutely, Infinity Ward died when West and Zampella left and took their top guys with them... The loser crew that Activision slapped together is just there to regurgitate the franchise and and maximize profits. "A Good Effort" isn't part of the equation.

Ah, welcome to 21st century console gaming. Gamers have a choice between consoles without a wide array of launch titles; or a choice of consoles where many of the launch titles are rehashed, rushed, buggy/unfinished.

Nice try. There's only one company that is making 1st party games of such a high quality/uniqueness/finish/replayability/enjoyabilit y that the admission price of the console is palatable just to be able to play only those handfull of games.

The Xbox One is already too weak TODAY.

http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Dead-Rising-3-Run...

This is just embarrassing. A launch title running at 720p 30 FPS on the next gen console!!?? It's bad enough that it cannot render native 720p, that can be forgiven, but to be locked at only 30FPS? That's pathetic.

People can tout about all these added gimmicks of the Xbox One, and those are fine, but it shouldn't completely fail at it's primary function: gaming.

If you are so worried about the resolution, graphics and framerates, why are you even looking at a console at all?
Seriously, 720P? 1080P? *Yawn*, my PC had that over a decade ago.
Even Battlefield 4 *still* had to be downgraded for the Xbox One and Playstation 4.

1440P panels for the PC are readily available and decently priced now, you couldn't pay me to use 720P or 1080P.

Uhhh because that's the discussion?

What kind of stupid comment is that anyway? So nobody can discuss something unless they're going to buy it personally?

Congrats. So did mine, captain douche :)

Unlike in the XBOX 360 or the PS3 era, the state of the PC is looking up.

Back in 2005 a good gaming PC (Athlon 64 + 7800 GTX) used the same amount of power as an XBOX 360, about 250W. But consoles are power constrained and PCs are not. Today you can't build a 150W PC as powerful as an XBOX One or a PS4. But you can build a 400W PC that is twice (or more times) as powerful.

This is why consoles will never again surpass a PC in performance. Microsoft learned its lesson that cramming 250W of heat into a XBOX 360 was a recipe for early failure. No console manufacturer will make that mistake again.

It depends on the design. Use the combination of a vapor chamber with a giant fan and it might be feasible.

We already know the PC is a more powerful gaming platform. Why do people insist on beating a dead horse and continue making the same comparison?
