Announcement comes from companies CEO JK Shin

Samsung launched its Galaxy S4 smartphone back in April and the device has proven to be incredibly popular. It took the smartphone about two months to sell 20 million units and four months after launch to hit 30 million units. As the phone has aged and competition increased, it's sales pace has declined.

The Galaxy S4 sold only about 5 million units in August. However, Samsung CEO JK Shin recently stated that over 40 million Galaxy S4 smartphones have been sold globally since the device launched. Considering the phone is been around for about six months, this is an impressive feat for Samsung.

Samsung has continued to roll out some interesting new products following the launch of the Galaxy S4. Most recently, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The Galaxy Note 3 has impressed both reviewers and customers; however, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch has proven to be rather unloved in many reviews.

There's LOTS of competition among Android. You aren't going to see a single Android model outsell the iPhone.

No, but you can take out over 90% of Android devices sold because they don't compete in specs, utility, or price because they're low end. Once you sift out to only the high end you're left with just a few models like the GS4, the LG G2, the HTC One, etc.

The GS4 demolishes the sales numbers of every other high end Android phone on the market. LG's high end shipments have plummeted year-over-year and HTC is in trouble. It isn't even close, the GS4 literally sells at ten times the rate of its high-end Android competition. Competition there is little more than a rounding error even if those other companies do have better hardware.

Secondly, someone who is going to buy a high end phone like a GS4 or a One isn't going to consider a low end Android smartphone. It just isn't a factor, just like someone who wants a performance PC isn't going to consider an eMachine or a netbook.

This is why competition from other Android devices doesn't matter. Samsung is crushing the other high end Android phones and the low end doesn't compete at all since that is a totally different market.
