This will likely push customers to get Amazon Prime

Amazon has upped its free shipping minimum order to $35 just ahead of the holiday season.

Amazon's free shipping minimum order has been $25 for the last decade, but the online retail giant has raised the minimum by $10 starting yesterday. This means that customers must purchase a minimum of $35 on eligible items and have it shipped to any address in the 50 states in order to receive free shipping.

Amazon, which announced that the free shipping minimum order would increase around the holidays earlier this year, is likely trying raising the minimum to keep up with the competition. Retailers like Target and Wal-Mart offer free shipping on purchases over $50, for example.

In the last three months of 2012, Amazon spent almost $1.8 billion USD on shipping. Clearly, shipping isn't cheap and the added $10 will help.

This is also likely an effort to push customers toward an Amazon Prime membership. It only costs $79 per year and offers free two-day shipping on all eligible items with no minimum order size. Prime members also receive access to the company's streaming movie and TV show library.

I've seen local stores and Newegg beat Amazon on price before.

Amazon's shipping (the company's, not third-party sellers) is amazing, all things considered.

Bought a charging accessory from .ca on a Friday, and received it in next day's afternoon via the free shipping offer. Most places normally don't ship on weekends.

Bought a bunch of stuff from The order itself took awhile - ohai new CC and big purchase verification - but when it did ship, I received the entire order in 3 days. The best part: no import taxes on $400 worth of goods. I'd be lucky to get the same order from another shop this fast and cheap (customs-wise) with EMS.

Have to agree about Amazon shipping policy. Earlier this year, ordered two storage shelving units for my garage storage that has the plywood for the shelving. Checked around locally and pricing was about on par with what I found on Amazon. Went with Amazon, because it would save me the trouble of lugging approximately 2 - 30-40 pound boxes from the store to my house, and this was free shipping. Though of course the delivery person didn't want to walk down a series of steps and drop off the boxes at my doorstep but instead left them in my carport, was okay because was only a few steps to the storage under my carport.

“Then they pop up and say ‘Hello, surprise! Give us your money or we will shut you down!' Screw them. Seriously, screw them. You can quote me on that.” -- Newegg Chief Legal Officer Lee Cheng referencing patent trolls
