Bohemia Interactive is onboard with the idea
Red Cross wants video game developers to add punishments for war crimes in their titles as war games continue to become more and more realistic.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
wants realistic war games to imitate the real thing by employing virtual consequences for war crimes like torture during interrogation, attacks on medical units, and deliberate attacks on civilians.
"It is very difficult to make the difference between real footage and the footage you can get from video games, so we are arguing that we have to get even closer to reality, and we also have to include the rules of the law on conflict," said François Sénéchaud, head of the ICRC's Division for the Integration and Promotion of the Law.
The ICRC made it clear that it has taken no stance on
violence in video games
, and that its suggestion only targets games that portray real-world war. It's not worried about fantasy games.
The ICRC also said that it isn't against the portrayal of war crimes, but that it just wants punishment included when these acts are committed.
Bohemia Interactive, which is makes the Arma series of realistic military games, has already agreed to include punishments for war crimes in its games.

RE: Patch GTA

I'd buy my kid GTA V if he/she wanted it. It'd be a good oppertunity for me to explain exactly why those actions performed on screen are wrong. I'd rather give them a good sense what's virtual and what's real instead of shielding them from that.
Maybe having kids growing up in an increasingly stupid and violent society might be the culprit, rather then any specific media. Taking responsibility and encouraging critical thinking is the cure for that. You can only teach them right if they know wrong, why it is wrong, and how to avoid doing so.
Also i'd like to add the controversy around the waterboarding that's supposed to be in the new GTA (dunno, haven't played, just heard the talk on the internet), absolutely laughable. GITMO IS STILL OPEN! shall we protest that before getting worked up about a game first?
Maybe if more people at a young age saw what waterboarding actually is and how bad it is, before they'd reached the age where they'd believe stuff such as "well if it's done to terrorists it's ok and these people are terrorists so it's ok", there'd be more protests. I'll bet you $1000 every kid who's ever played carmageddon knows it's wrong to drive over people and hasn't done so.
They'll also still wonder about the point value of driving over old ladies at crosswalks, cause that's fun. But they will not DO it.
"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it." -- SCEA President Jack Tretton
