Features is not yet triggered, presumably may be turned on shortly
A teardown of the upcoming
update to Gmail
-- Gmail 4.6 -- revealed numerous confirmations that ads lay lurking in the update from Google Inc. (
), as well as showcasing some welcome improvements.
strings, 8 classes, and even a full library with "Ad" in their names in the Gmail APK. A big question left unanswered by the teardown is whether the feature will harass users with fake email ads, a feature added in a recent
controversial update to the desktop browser client
, or simply ad normal banner ads like those found in many free (ad-supported) Android games.

the changelog for Gmail 4.6 hints that the new mobile ads will be in the form of email spam.

The update does bring some welcome changes in a heavy overhaul to the Gmail card, including a warning about unset messages, new icons for contacts you don't have a picture of (a stylish letter from their first initial), and darker UI icons.

The reviewers were indifferent or perhaps slightly negative on the decision to do away with the "cancel" button in the email "send" dialogue, which now requires you to press the "back" button (beneath the screen) to cancel.
Most Android users should get the tile "upgrade" sometime later this week, bringing their freeloading mobile Gmail days to an end.

If you're referring to me, no. I only got the BlackBerry because it was supplied by my employer. This was back in 2005 or so. I saw the progression from Palm Treo to Rim BlackBerry to Nokia Nseries to Apple iPhone to Google Android, and I still wasn't interested.
It's not a manufacturer problem, it's a fundamental issue: smartphones are too damn small. I am not interested in playing video games or watching movies on a tiny screen. I have a 46" HDTV, one of the first LED backlit models. Before that, I had a 61" rear-projection. Now that LEDs are relatively cheap, a 60" model is less expensive than what I paid for my current TV.
Same thing for music. I never liked listening to music through headphones or tiny speakers. I bought the Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 when it was still awesome. Then I switched to a 5.1 receiver and floor standing speakers. I gave up on mobile audio after owning a Sony CD player and two iPods. They just weren't satisfying. Plus, I started losing my hearing.
Tablets don't do it for me, either. They would be ok for books, but I have my TV for that. When I'm on the road, I like to do things that don't require technology, like sports and drinking. And chasing women.
Sure, it's convenient to be able to check email when I'm on the road, but none of my email is that important now that I'm out of the technology business. It's cool to see where things are going, but it's not necessary for me to have the latest toys. Except for my home theater. ;)

Well, not really just you but for anyone that may/ will have a problem with the full on Google ecosystem there's, thankfully for now, Blackberry with their upcoming and very capable (spec-wise) Z30. Though it's tough to see how long they'll last at this point.
There's also WP, provided they continue to gain more support from outside devs.
