Navigating apps and graphic animations are making people feel nauseous

Apple's new operating system iOS 7 is making people sick. No, seriously -- they're actually getting physically sick.

According to a new report from The Verge, some iPhone and iPad users who switched to iOS 7 are experiencing symptoms like headaches and nausea from the rapid motions when navigating the OS. More specifically, swiping through the apps and looking at certain graphic animations have caused problems.

IOS 7 users are taking to Apple forums to voice their experiences. For instance, in the Apple Support Communities forum, user Ensorceled posted "The zoom animations everywhere on the new iOS 7 are literally making me nauseous and giving me a headache. It's exactly how I used to get carsick if I tried to read in the car. How do I turn them off?  Do I have to revert to 6?"

In the same forum, a user in another thread asked how to turn off the iOS 7 navigation animations because it's making them dizzy. Some people have even complained about severe vertigo, according to Huffington Post

Users, unfortunately, cannot go back to iOS 6. The only real "solution" is to go to Settings>General>Accessibility, then find "Reduce Motion" and turn it on.

However, this doesn't completely fix the problem. It takes care of the parallax effect, but doesn't get rid of the quick zooming.

We'll have to wait and see if Apple releases an additional fix for the issue, or at least controls that minimize the quick motions.

That is one feature they didnt copy from WP8, WebOS and Android. ;)

Maybe people are just "looking at it wrong".

Remember. if anyone else has OS-induced motion sickness, Apple invented it! And they will sue!

my company iPhone4 is still rocking iOS6... co-workers upgraded their 4/4s/5.... most are having issues, including the issue in this article.

I'll just stick with iOS6 for now...

If your iPhone 4 isn't a 4s I'd leave it on OS6. OS7 will make it crawl. Remember OS5 running on 3GS? Yeah, that all over again.

I don't understand Apple pushing OS's to devices that can't run it. It's just a marketing ploy to say "our OS market isn't saturated."

Google could have supported ICS/JB on older 600MHz Gingerbread devices, but why punish the end-user?

Rather than saturated, I think you meant fragmented...

...and rather than "why punish the end-user?", should be "why punish the user more than we need to in order to convince them to go out and buy a new Android device?"

Actually, as a iPhone 4 user (company issued), I went ahead and made the switch to iOS7. I find that the phone is actually MORE responsive than it was on iOS6. Not sure why that would be, maybe that iOS7 is actually less graphically intense than iOS6 and can run better on the lesser hardware of the 4? Again, I'm not sure, but that's been my observation.

You, sir, are talking out your ass.

I have a iPhone 4 with iOS7 and it is just as responsive as iOS6.

The iPhone5s loads slightly quicker, but the responsiveness between the 2 phones and OS's is not noticeable.

LOL... OK, but irritated ("I'm sick of this stupid interface!!!")and nauseated ("I'm gonna puke")are 2 different things entirely. ;)

I must admit, however, that it's amazing to see a company successfully replicate the side effects of common recreational drugs in a single software release. And, depending on where you live, it's cheaper than buying those drugs!

Ooooo. Does that mean if I could somehow put iOS 7 on SGS4, it would become waterproof? Cool! Never seen an OS that could do that!

If iOS 7 didn't make people sick, I would look into porting it to Samsung hardware :D

Kidding aside though, motion sickness from fast moving images or flashing lights really is a known issue for may people.

For instance I cannot play FPS games for this very reason and if you take me into an imax theater with a roller coaster movie, chances are I will be ready to toss my cookies by the time the movie is finished.

The problem is related to a mild form of epilepsy where fast moving images and lights can cause very mild seizures that feel a lot like motion sickness.

While doubtful that iOS 7 would trigger something like this in me, I have no doubt at all that there are folks out there with more severe forms if this affliction.

When I was going through GUI design class back in the day (we had to make our own GPFs...up hill...both ways...), we had it pounded into our heads not to put red text on top of a blue background, or vice-versa, because apparently that's a great way to induce seizures.

This article was useful, though. Although I don't have any motion sickness problems, I did check the option to reduce the motion on my iPad 2 - doesn't really add that much to the experience for me.
