It made $800 million in the first 24 hours

"Grand Theft Auto V" is shattering sales records with $1 billion in sales in just the first three days of availability.

Take-Two Interactive -- which is the distributor of the hot new video game -- announced that GTA V's $1 billion sales in three days blasts the record of any other video game, film or entertainment product ever released.

In its first day alone, GTA V grossed over an enormous $800 million

“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.”

GTA V cost between $200 million and $250 million and took about five years to make. The last installment in the series -- GTA IV -- was released in 2008.

For comparison purposes, Activision Blizzard Inc's "Call Of Duty: Black Ops II" took 15 days to hit $1 billion in global sales after being released in November 2012. Its first-day sales hit $500 million.

GTA V gameplay allows gamers to cruise around a fictional world based on real-life locations such as Los Angeles. For those with youngsters, it does feature adult material like carjacking, picking up prostitutes and murdering bystanders (which is typical for the series).

The game was released September 17 and is available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

One billion??!! Daaaamn!

There are that many Playstation and Xboxes out there? This is not even available for the PC. I would love to mess with this, but I don't use consoles.

Huge #'s. Wholly crap. IT toom MS 1 year to loe that much $ on surface and RIMM 3 months to lose that much on phones. Here GTA makes it in 3 days LOL.

Yeah last 3 days of retail sale, and the last 5 or more years of development.

Dont forget, RIMM worked on their killer OS10 phones for 3 years before it released and lost 1 billion this quarter. So there is bang for your buck there LOL.

GTA V has also been in development for a long time and an analyst estimated it cost 137 million to make. Quite a risk but GTA has a big enough following to go for it and it paid off. Good for them. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see people waiting for the PS4 and Xbox one versions or getting it again. Add to it the PC version isn't out which probably increases sales of the console versions and decreases piracy.

I haven't bought it yet because I'm waiting for the PS4 version. I'd LOVE to play GTAV, but I am through with the current gen. I'm not spending money on a game for a console I'll be getting rid of in a couple of months.

I have a feeling there are still a lot of people thinking the same. This game could have another pop. Curious to see where it lands when all is said and done.

Yes. Though in any case, the important thing here is that the development of GTA6 is now assured.

I predict it won't look much better. They spent 5 years developing it with PS3 and Xbox 360 in mind. The most we can really expect from the PS4 port is higher resolution and AA. It will be like the PC version of GTA IV, but hopefully less buggy.

Sony is working on a solution for backwards compatibility through the Gaikai service they bought last year. Although no details yet on if/how they will allow you to play the PS3 games you have already bought.

Ya, because the people that pirate things go out and buy them when piracy is not an option...

Are you seriously going to fall for that circular path of logic? Will you then use this later to further that fallacious logic?

I wont buy it because it's not on PC. are there people claiming they are buying because its not on PC?

There is no proof either way, but you can look at the numbers presented by people that make billions on DRM if you'd like. I'm sure they are about as honest as petroleum companies.

Not entirely. I do believe there is a majority of pirates who will never buy a game they will forever pirate there is no changing that.

However Im positive not every pirate is poor and cant afford the game but pirates out of convenience. You dont have to be tech savy today just a bit resourceful. Im also positive the less resourceful ones look for their buddy to provide that or offer it up to them if they had it. Hey dont buy it Ill get you a copy mentality.

With that If a pirated version of the game were available for download for PC they would just download a cracked PC version instead. The logic being why not its $50-$60.00 they can spend on something else and thats a chunk of change. Being there is no PC version easily available for download if they want to play the game or with friends they will bite the bullet.

The second part is the friends of the pirate/resource well Joe cant get me a cracked copy Ill just go out and buy it this time I dont want to be left out everyone else is playing and I want in.

Want or Need to play > Convenience of obtaining cracked copy.

I play pirated games, and I'm not ashamed of it.

I also have plenty of games that I bought because I have played them before and I wanted to buy them. Usually, I try game from illegal source (no demos anymore) and If I like game I buy it.

If I have to buy a game I did not tried I would rather not buy it. I think pirating is helping PC sales of GOOD titles, that are worth to spend money on.

Hats a good point I can think of many titles I purchased that weren't worth the cd they were printed on much less if it came on a napkin. Or the trial version which has features disabled then when you purchase it the disabled features don't live up to expectations or they release a new version and look for more money on you upgrading.

If Adobe would only wake up and smell the coffee on pricing their products for everyone instead of saying you can have a career in them. I bet a lot more people would buy the product instead of pirate it.

Thanks for the input nanny.

If you are pointing at this game and saying it is the cause of violent and criminal behavior, I would point at the world 20 years ago and challenge you to show me the difference in crime rates.

I would bet you don't really find a difference that you can prove is tied to violent games.

It is asshats with attitudes like yours that assumes that media is the cause of violence and poor social attitudes. The real cause is that kids do not go outside and interact with their friends anymore face-to-face. They are too busy sitting on their butts in front of a tv, computer or console.

Sure it keeps them off the streets and out of the hands of the social deviants, but when they finally do go out and interact with their peers, they have learned precious little about real-life social interaction. That education requires that a kid goes out, make his social mistakes and learn (sometimes the hard way by getting his ass kicked) how to deal with society.

Don't blame it on games, Blame it on parents that have no clue how to prepare their kids for participating in society.

Although still largely impressive, keep in mind that 1 billion dollars accounts for 17 million copies of the game sold at $60 a piece.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By Monkey's Uncle on 9/20/2013 6:32:11 PM , Rating: 2
17 million is still one shitload of games to sell in 3 days. Remember this is not being sold to PC owners - it is only available to console players.

That is what makes the numbers in so short of a time so insane.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By inighthawki on 9/20/2013 6:50:48 PM , Rating: 2
Absolutely. I am still rather amazed myself. I was merely trying to point out that 17 million is not an unreasonable number of consoles.

If you re-read your OP, you can kind of see how it almost sounds like you were implying disbelief that there were over a billion sales (and thus a billion game consoles). 17 million is still an astounding number, but there are way more than 17 million consoles out there (According to vgchartz it's about 150 million across both consoles). Just wanted to clarify that is all.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By harshbarj on 9/21/2013 12:01:34 AM , Rating: 2
But the point is that is still a LOT to sell in just 3 days. In that 3 days, over 11% of the current gen console owners bought the game. That is huge any way you look at it. If 11%+ have it now, how many more will buy it over the next 3 months.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By inighthawki on 9/21/2013 5:41:03 AM , Rating: 2
Agreed. I'm certainly not saying I'm not impressed :) In fact I'm utterly astounded.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By Monkey's Uncle on 9/21/2013 9:05:45 AM , Rating: 2
Yeah, I guess I should have put that as "$ billion".

My shock wasn't about the $billion. I can see a game like this raking in that much over a couple months is a given. The shock was that it was a $billion dollars in sales from only PS3 and XBOX 360 owners in only 3 days.

That is a crapton of sales in a very short time from a limited audience (only 2 consoles of specific versions). Of 150 million consoles user base, 17 million is 10% of them buying this game in the first 3 days. That is insane!

I can only imagine how much they would have sold if they had included a PC version. I doubt Rockstar is complaining much. That is a huge and fast payback for a $250 million investment. And that revenue will only grow for the next while.

I only wish I could have gotten it for my PC :(

RE: Sheeeeit!
By inighthawki on 9/21/2013 3:00:44 PM , Rating: 2
Agreed. Let's hope that the PC version isn't a terrible console port with really awful DRM this time around.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By Roffles on 9/21/2013 7:00:10 PM , Rating: 2
Where does the 150 million user base number come from? VGchartz tells me there are 157.5 million units sold to date. I would have to guess ~25% of those units are no longer being used due to various reasons. I'm thinking closer to 15% of console owners bought this game, maybe more!

I already traded in my ps3 and 360 for the PS4, so i'm one of the ones waiting for either a PC version or a next generation console version. I think there's a lot more money to be made here for rockstar.

RE: Sheeeeit!
By Monkey's Uncle on 9/22/2013 7:37:37 AM , Rating: 2
I was actually being conservative ;)

A large number of those console sales are to families with more than one potential user. A console's user doesn't have to be using it 24/7 - they just have to own it since they can pick up the controller at any time and play it. Hell, they might even dig it out of the box in the back of the closet just to play this game on it. You don't know and neither do I so it is a lot simpler to keep the user number at a simple 1-1 ratio with console sales.

Regardless of installed base, 17 million copies sold in 3 days is a buttload of sales. I am sure that as I write this that number has passed 20-25 million copies sold just because a lot of people were told over the last few days that it is selling like hotcakes. That kind of publicity tends to enhance demand and drive sales higher.

Oh man, that is so funny. Where do you get that idea?

All you need to play a game of this fidelity sat the same specs that a console runs at is:

1. A Dual core processor
2. 4GB of memory
3. A mid-level graphics card.

5.1 sound is already built. So is the hard drive & networking.

I would venture to say that most PCs on sale now would cover this. If they can't, they can be expanded. Can you say the same for consoles?

And yes, there are at least 50x as many PCs out in the wild than PS3s and XBox 360s. I would venture to say that at least half of those have specs that could match/beat either of these consoles.

What consoles provide to game developers is:

1. A closed platform with a known hardware configuration
2. Less possibility of piracy due to the closed platforms and DRM

And that my friend is pretty much it.

What you are not taking into account is that consoles may have been highly capable when they came out, but the PS3 is now 7 years old. The XBOX 360 is 8 years old. Technology moves fast in that amount of time.

The graphics processors in each of these (ATI Xenos X1800 derivative for the XBOX, Nvidia RSX G70 derivative for the PS3) may have been state of the art 8 years ago, gut both of them are outstripped even by current embedded graphics. I really was being generous to the consoles when I said Mid-level PC graphics are needed. Currently integrated video processors will handle the workload just fine at the same conditions these consoles run under.

But all of this really si moot since there was information leaked about a PC version of GTA V being released in time for the Black Friday/Christmas rush.

Just to add some facts to this.

1. A Dual core processor
2. 4GB of memory
3. A mid-level graphics card.

equals a low end computer which means you will be playing the game with everything set to low and it will look worse than playing in on a current gen console.

I agree with the rest of your post but that is a POS computer listed there and that game will run like ass on it.

A low end PC likely has several times the processing power of the consoles on tap.

Oh man, that is so funny. Where do you get that idea?

PC sales numbers and Steam's hardware survey in particular, both providing data suggesting most PC's lack significant graphical power.

The healthiest segment of PC gaming are those games that don't require especially capable hardware. Thus, the suggestion that the PC platform is significant to high-fidelity games is a canard.

But I get it: The PC Master Race clowns are extremely hypersensitive to anything other than glowing, masturbatory praise of their Holy Platform, and anything that could possibly be interpreted as less-than-positive warrants a "burn at the stake" mentality.

They don't lack significant power.
Even Intel Decelerator graphics bundled for free can run console ports at 720P@30fps, aka, the same as the consoles.
And considering how cheap an Intel NUC is...

The PC games industry is a 20 Billion dollar market, Valve helped consolidate it and fixed many of the issues that plagued the market by providing convenience and a price gamers are willing to pay.
In comparison the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is a 15.5 Billion dollar games market and that's two platforms combined.

As for the Steam survey specifically, 30% of systems weren't included as it falls into the "unknown" category, plus systems with nVidia's Optimus or the AMD equivalent don't show their discreet GPU's in the survey, only the Integrated chips, which is usually Intel.

Lastly, most people don't actually see a need to even upgrade, even a Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked a little, which is 6-odd years old and a $30-$40 Radeon 6570 is capable of playing 99% of games today at 720P easily enough.
When you have a highly popular, albeit demanding game, people upgrade, aka. "The Crysis Effect". (nVidia's profits actually rose after that games release.)

If you are someone who buys allot of games, the PC even works out cheaper than buying a console.
Sales are plentiful, with the addition of free online access.

The PC Gaming Master race is truly supreme. ;)

Wait, so I didn't need to buy a $450 video card to play the latest games like Far Cry 3? I just need a $35 budget card and I can play everything at the lowest settings and be perfectly happy! Yeah!

This is the strangest argument ever. Most people's PCs are off the shelf Dells and HPs that have NO graphical ability other than Solitaire. And Intel graphics can play current console games? L-O-L. Play Far Cry 3 on integrated Intel anything and tell me how your experience is, please. Do it. For all of us. I'd like to know just how fantastic it is.

I have all consoles and a gaming PC. I've gone through dozens of video cards throughout the years, from budget to high performance and to say low end PCs can compete with dedicated gaming hardware is ridiculous. I've seen it first hand, it does NOT happen.

... Okay. So it's "the same as the console".

Why not just get a console?

The PC games industry is a 20 Billion dollar market,

Only a fraction of which consists of high-fidelity, cutting-edge AAA titles. Don't be absurd.

If you are someone who buys allot of games, the PC even works out cheaper than buying a console.

You've done an excellent job hashing out the usual PC-wank canards. "If you buy more games than you can possibly play, PC gaming comes out cheaper!"

Yeah, but only an idiot buys a hundred games a week, knowing he/she'll only ever be able to play a tiny percent of those.

The PC Gaming Master race is truly supreme. ;)
