Special Service Police Sedan is aimed detectives and administrators

The truth is not every law enforcement officer needs a vehicle that is pursuit rated. For some administrative types or detectives, what they really need is a vehicle that is fuel-efficient to help reduce fuel expenses for the department. All of Ford's past police vehicles were specifically pursuit rated, including its new batch of EcoBoost-powered interceptor vehicles.

Ford has announced that after requests from various law enforcement agencies it has created a new Special Service Police Sedan featuring a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that promises best-in-class fuel efficiency. Ford says that it specifically designed the vehicle to meet the needs of detectives, administrators, campus police, and law enforcement agencies looking for the best fuel efficiency possible.

Even though the 2.0-liter EcoBoost is a small engine, it still produces 240 hp and 270 pound-foot of torque. Ford says that in law enforcement trim the vehicle will be able to achieve 30 mpg or better in EPA highway ratings. The engine is mated with a standard six-speed automatic transmission.


The fuel savings potential is impressive for departments switching from the aging 4.6-liter V8 Crowd Victoria which is rated for only 17 MPG combined.

“Not every police officer needs a pursuit-rated vehicle,” said Jonathan Honeycutt, Ford police marketing manager. “As agencies look to replace older, V8-equipped cruisers with more efficient cars, Ford is at the ready with the most fuel-efficient – yet still very capable – full-size police vehicle.”

Ford says that while being more fuel efficient, the new special service vehicle will have all the safety and durability features the Ford uses in its existing interceptor sedans.

I have an 05 P71 Intercerptor.

On a recent trip to the Grand Canyon, and back home, I achieved 27mpg highway. I know that isn't ground breaking. And maybe 17 combined is all I get. But I am pretty sure I average 20 in the city. Which I think would put my combined somewhere around 23/24 mpg.

Oh yeah, Arizona highways, also, a good bit of my driving and receiving 27mpg was cruising at 75/80 mph.

Just food for thought about the stated vs actual mpg ratings.

Other than that, I am interested in these new Interceptors linked in this thread. Once departments have them en mass they should start showing up on auctions 5 to 7 years down the road.

Have to compare EPA ratings to EPA ratings. It's not useful to compare personal results with government standards.

2005 Crown Vic Police Interceptor: EPA rated 14/20 mpg

If you can get 27 mpg in that, I would assume you could get 37 mpg in the new one.

I wonder what you're doing differently from fuelly users, who typically report 18-20 mpg.

Are you talking about a former police vehicle? Or an actual still in service police vehicle? If the latter, why the heck are you using a police vehicle for personal use?

I'm guessing its the latter though. And that means your car is a few hundred pounds lighter than it was when in police trim. There is a lot of extra weight in police vehicles.

30 mpg out of one is pretty good.

Out of service police vehicle. Obviously some of the equipment has been removed, like the prisoner cage. But I still have stab plates.

Anyways, as to the question, of what I am doing differently?

I am not sure, I haven't read the link provided above. However, I drive very conservatively most the time. I accelerate very slowly, decelerate quite a bit, so even in town driving I ease into all stops. Care engine rarely goes above idle rpm, which can be done if you barely depress the accelerator, and most around town driving can be down by only depressing slightly to get up to speed, then letting off accelerator completely.

When on the highway, I don't depress the accelerator more when climbing hills, so my speed often drops down to around 50 on the highway instead of 75, but heck, sit in the truck lane and it isn't a problem and I don't pay more for it.

Why would you want an old police car? I can't imagine the amount of puke and other bodily fluids that have been left in them. Plus, I'm sure they get treated like rental cars by the cops driving them.
