GTA V is a resounding success

I don't think there is anyone out there who expected Grand Theft Auto V to be anything other than a massive success. And true to form, the numbers are in for the first day of GTA V sales and sales for the game have broken records for publisher Take-Two Interactive.

GTA V racked up $800 million in sales globally during the first 24 hours of availability.  That figure makes GTA V the most successful member of the Grand Theft Auto franchise in the first 24 hours of availability.
The game launched on September 17 for the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.

The game was developed by Rockstar North and published by Take-Two Interactive. GTA V also has access to Grand That Auto Online, which is an open world game set to launch on October 1, 2013. Access to the online world is included with the game purchase.

Yeah but the problem is this: Once you've played Ultima 6 and 7 through to completion, no modern open-world games feel "alive" or fulfilling. They all feel empty or missing something that eventually spoils the atmosphere to the point where you look at these games and go... "what's the point?"

All sandbox games are fatally flawed once you've experienced the original sandbox masterpieces. Even those Ultimas weren't perfect but they to this day are still superior to anything we have now.

There's a reason I've never beaten a single Elder Scrolls title yet played them all. Morrowind had amazing story and depth... but was too easy past level 12. Oblivion looked beautiful and had talking, animated citizens that said all of three lines. It was a cardboard world of props and nothing more. Skyrim alleviated some of this by really upping the atmosphere and giving citizens more individuality. Yet, once you step foot into a dungeon they all end up being the same linear progression down a lengthy corridor akin to a haunted house, culminating in some tough guy you kill and then a passageway that takes you back close to the beginning of the cave/dungeon/etc.

Every single time you hit one of those scenarios--and you do, you catch onto it, the games fall apart and the will to continue is destroyed. Ultima games always had you searching to the end for more. More content. More discoveries. More intrigue. More everything. The books were even worth reading. The quests were multi-layered and involved many individuals and rarely seemed the "same."

Why is it that nothing has come since that even tries to be like these of old?

So meh. GTA is GTA is just another sandbox like the rest that try so hard yet fail so greatly. About the only exception would be Stalker and even those aren't exactly full-blown sandboxes. Fallout 3 is a close second.

I dunno. I'm just old and crotchety I suppose. :)

i know exactly what you mean. morrowind (I still have the limited edition figurine that came with the black box) was flawed, but immersive and alive somehow. by comparison, oblivion was like walking through a painting: very pretty, but empty and sterile.

As someone that played the ever-loving crap out of Ultima 6 and 7, I completely disagree with this.
