Reports say consumers want the more colorful iPhone 5C

IPhone 5S inventory is significantly lower than that of the iPhone 5C, according to mobile carriers.

A new report from All Things D says that carriers have received the iPhone 5S in extremely low numbers for the Friday launch. One carrier even said it will have "grotesquely unavailable inventory.”

However, the carriers say they have a plentiful amount of iPhone 5Cs available, which will launch this Friday as well.

So why the gap in supply? All Things D says it's because customers prefer the colorful 5Cs as opposed to the 5S. The 5C comes in five vibrant colors while the high-end 5S comes in grey (black), silver and gold.

The report notes that demand for the high-end version may be less than expected, as well.

The iPhone 5C is touted as the "budget" iPhone, sporting a $99 price tag for the 16GB model and $199 for the 32GB model (both with two-year contracts). The iPhone 5S runs $199, $299, and $399 for 16GB 32GB, and 64GB versions respectively. Both phones are expected to launch at Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile this Friday.

Isn't the 5C just a cheap 5?

I'm confused. The little I've followed the 5C is just a cheaper iPhone 5 right? So if Apple did their normal thing and introduced one new phone the 5S and then knocked $100 off the iPhone 5 price it would be the same thing as getting the 5c, ignoring the color choices. I don't think people would be lining up for a $99 iPhone 5 like this.

So apple fans are going giddy over a phone that is only more colorful than the one they could get anyway? I know we tease the Apple fan-boys but the RDF must still be strong after Jobs.

The mistake is ignoring the color choices. Women and kids (and some men) really go for that. Specs? Who cares. Apple does know their market.

That they do... They have made an absolute gold mine selling smartphones to people that don't know much about smartphones... Brilliant.

There are people who will buy these just because of the color options. Some people buy these things and only make phone calls, take pictures, and update Facebook. It's an excessive cost for something like that but if no one wants to cater to these people other than Apple, Nokia, and Moto that's their problem for passing up free money.
