Nokia's biggest Windows Phone yet sees its unveil bumped a month, but that shouldn't impact its Nov. sale date
Like many rumors, reports that Microsoft Corp. (
Nokia Oyj. (
) would unveil its upcoming Windows Phone 8 GDR3
six-inch phablet at a Sept. 26 press event
in New York City proved premature. Nokia reportedly opted to bump that unveil date till Oct. 22, according to
@evleaks Twitter account
While fans and those curious will be disappointed at the wait, the later unveil actually makes more sense as the device itself doesn't start shipping (reportedly) until November.
Meanwhile image leaks continue. A user of Chinese microblogging site Weibo posted an image purportedly of
a Lumia 1520
. Mysteriously, though, the device is branded with a Verizon Wireless logo. AT&T, Inc. (
) previously had been rumored to get the device first. But it now looks like Verizon Wireless -- now a sole subsidiary of Verizon Communications Inc. (
) -- may get a piece of the action as well.

A second leak, from a Chinese telecommunications regulatory employee testing the upcoming device (
as noted by
), reveals/confirms the following spec for the device:
quad-core Qualcomm Inc. (
) Snapdragon 800 SoC
on-die LTE (via Snapdragon chip)
2GB of RAM
32GB of storage
20-megapixel rear-facing camera
6-inch 1080p (1920x1080 pixel) display
Pictures of the device (above) also were leaked by the employee.

Sales of the Lumia Windows Phone
have been picking up steam
of late. Nokia's colorful designs and
strong camera hardware
, paired with Microsoft's distinctive new UI propelled Windows Phone to be
the fastest growing platform in Q2 2013
That fresh success has rivals taking note. For example Apple, Inc. (
) moved away from its typical industrial designs,
releasing the iPhone 5C
, which took design cues from the iPod Nano (painted metal) and the colorful Lumia. It could be argued that the iPhone 5C
borrows most strongly from the Lumia's design cues
, given its plastic body (versus the metal in the iPod Nanos). Analysts were
not impressed by that effort from Apple
, which some decried as a "me-too" product.

RE: Very Nice

I would not say that it would beat the Note 3 "hands down". The thing that makes a Phablet useful is the software suite attached to it which makes it as useful as a light netbook or other small form factor computer. As much as I love WP8 (and I really do love it!), this device will not have any such software enhancements. There may be updates down the road, and there may be apps to be released to help fill the void, but at the end of the day it is an akwardly large Windows Phone, rather than a phone with tablet features.
All that said, I really think that I want one. A nice Ram and camera upgrade, amoled screen, expandable memory... this is going to be a great device to be sure, and if my contract was up then I would jump all over it simply because I need something just a bit bigger than my Lumia 920 for taking notes at work and such. All the same I would still rather it have a slightly smaller screen (5-5.5"), and I would really like to see some mods or improvements to programs like OneNote and other office apps so that they act more like their desktop counterparts rather than the sad mobile knock-offs that they are. So maybe a refresh device next year will be the one that I will jump on.
I just hope that others in my 2 year contract boat do not give them reason to discontinue the line before then.
