Galaxy Gear gets a hefty price tag

Samsung continues its tradition of supersized smartphones with the introduction of the Galaxy Note 3. The Android 4.3-powered smartphone now uses a 5.7" 1080p Super AMOLED (up from 5.5") and weighs in at 168 grams. The Galaxy Note 3 packs quite a bit of power under the hood courtesy of a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and a whopping 3GB of RAM. Samsung has also seen fit to cram in a 13MP rear-facing camera, LTE connectivity, and a 3200 mAh battery.
Samsung has listened to all the critics that bash its phones for being plasticky and for not using more "premium" materials, so it has now equipped the back of the phone with a faux leather. The rest of the device is still made of the plastic that you've learned to love (or hate).
The Galaxy Note 3 will launch worldwide on September 25 (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all onboard in the U.S.).

Also announced today was the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. While details of the device have leaked over the past week (including shots of its interface), the final product differs slightly from the leaked photos provided by Venture Beat. The watch uses a tiny 1.63" AMOLED display with a resolution of 320x320, features 4GB of internal storage, 800MHz processor, and 512MB of RAM.
Samsung, however, was quick to point out that this is not a standalone phone -- it is simply a companion device for your smartphone. In this capacity, the Galaxy Gear uses low-energy Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to your phone. Once connected, you'll be able to receive all of your smartphone's notifications, control music, dictate voice memos, and place/answer calls Dick Tracy style. Samsung has even managed to toss in a 1.9 MP camera that will allow you to shoot up to 720p video.
There will be a wealth of applications available for the Galaxy Gear -- 70 initially -- all of which will be downloadable from the Galaxy Gear Manager app.

The Galaxy Gear features a diminutive 315 mAh battery and will only last a day on a charge.
The Galaxy Gear will be priced at $299 when it launches in October, which is a hefty price to pay for a "companion" device.

"Samsung was forced to bring this to the market first, even though it's not perfected, because if they waited Apple would then sue them for 'stealing'."

That is actually a good point... I hadnt considered that. I thought the Gear looks rushed, like it just wasnt quite ready for prime time, but you are correct. If they waited and released it later, Apple would sue them and the millions of dumbfounded dipshits that worship Apple would believe it (cough Nortel), even though Fossil had a smartwatch on the market a decade ago.

"That is the dumbest thing I have seen anywhere for a long time. Please tell me you don't actually believe that, please tell me you are just being sarcastic or ironic or anything. "

Have you not been paying any attention at all to Apple the past 2-3 years? I know you are biased, but come on...

Yes, I FULLY believe that if Apple released a smartwatch and Samsung released one afterward, Apple would absolutely positively sue them.

I'm saving this post so when Apple tries to get a Samsung Gear import ban, I can throw it in your face :)

Seeing Apple suing everyone in their markets and thinking it might continue is a natural progression of intelligence... 1...2...3... What might happen next... 4? Of course. Not seeing it is a lack, or more likely in your case just denial. You either dont see it or cant admit it period.

Samsung is smart to protect themselves, and I imagine we will see more companies come out with smartwatches asap to avoid Apples legal attacks. I know you dont want to see Apple that way, but that is how they are... This really has nothing to do with my intellect. Anyone paying any attention at all would agree on this. At the very least any company making anything that Apple also makes MUST be on guard at all times to keep themselves safe from Apples legal wrangling. If you can't at least see that, and admit to it then its you disappointing me. Even crazy Mike Tyson admits he bit Holyfields ear off. If they went head to head again, Holyfield would be wise to protect his appendages.

By your logic, Apple are actually geniuses.

They 'forced' Samsung to release a rushed, nasty looking piece of junk, which people are laughing at already, and probably cost a fortune to develop...just by dropping a rumour that they may make an iWatch.

Samsung fell for that one big time!

If Apple do finally develop an iWatch, I can guarentee you it will be better. And if it isn't, they won't release it.

A product like this doesn't get made in that short of a time. Samsung was obviously working on this for a while, or had at least done the R&D already.

In a perfect world they would have waited to release it. Sadly with Apple behaving like a wild gorilla with lawyers, being first to market is more important than being best in the market.

Mind you this is just my personal speculation. We have no evidence that legal-jackassery is behind this release. But I think it's naive to believe that wasn't a part of it.

They'll be too busy buying Note 3's to worry about a watch :)

Indeed they will!

Hella nice phablet! Wonder how long it will be before Apple tried to put out their copy of it. I am guessing about 2 years (just in time for the Note 5).

"By your logic, Apple are actually geniuses."

Well, they have manipulated the laws and PR with the skill of a seasoned, corrupted politician. You could argue that it is genius, I call it BS.

"Apple would sue them and the millions of dumbfounded dipshits that worship Apple would believe it (cough Nortel), even though Fossil had a smartwatch on the market a decade ago."

I forgot this part... Yes, most importantly, the Apple fanboys would cry foul forever. There are already Apple fans saying Samsung copied the smartwatch from Apple, as a matter of fact, I read it here when Samsung announced they were workign on a smartwatch, pretty sure it was Nortel. Forget that it's been done by Fossil 10 years ago, Samsung copied it from Apple. LOL.

Yes, Tony, the company you worship is that nasty, and many of the fans are that dim. Dont forget, Nortel is the guy who actually said, Samsung copied the 16,32,64mb ram sizes from Apple. And then DEFENDED his statement. ugh...

See Tony? I rest my case. 2 huge apple fans already convinced Samsung precopied Apples iWatch... And they are mad about it. LOL. This is exactly what I was talking about above...Please , I am just dying to see your honest take on Jacks rant.

And Jack, I really don't give a crap about Samsung, or Apple or who copies who (both copy blatantly and always have). I am just tired of the lawsuits and this stupid assed faux outrage, and losers like you that keep bitching about it. You Sound like a bunch of loser kindergarteners. Stop copying me. Stop copying me. Get a life already. Apple is a company and they copy as much as the next one. Don't you have anything better to idolize?

"Unfortunately, on this site you're not allowed to suggest that ALL smartphones and touchpads on the market today were influenced/copied from the iPhone and iPad designs."

Of course they were... Just as iPhone and iPad were influenced by Palm and RIMM before it, and so on and so on. That is how business works and always has. The issue people have is the assertion that Apple "owns" any and all multitouch designs and deserves to sue for them and ban products. Apple copied and built on to earlier products, just like all companies do. They haven't done anything lately and the world not only caught up, but passed them by. If Jack had his way, no-one else would be allowed to make a multitouch OS/phone or tablet and the market would die completely.

Sorry Tony but you reap what you sow. A LOT of people would actually believe Apple is capable of that. Why not? They've done it before, they continue to do it, and they'll do it again.
