There's a mobile app and cloud service available
knows a thing or two about
, and now it's applying that knowledge to the car market with its new Here Auto connected car platform.
Nokia announced the new platform today, describing it as an application that can be embedded to a vehicle's navigation system. It also has a cloud service and a mobile app.
Those who have the Here Auto software in their in-car navigation system can take advantage of maps (2D, 3D or street-level) and voice navigation -- all without the need for a data connection. But with Web access, drivers can get real-time weather and traffic updates.
The mobile app ties into the service, allowing drivers to find their car and plan trips ahead of time.
There's no word on when it Here Auto will be available, but Nokia is working with parts supplier Continental to recruit automakers willing to integrate the software into their systems. For the time being, the app works exclusively with Windows Phones, but it should be available to iOS and Android later.
Here Auto will make an appearance at the International Motor Show in Germany on September 10.
Nokia unveiled its
"Here" maps and location service
in November 2012, It's a cloud-based brand and platform for location/mapping, and it provides 3D mapping, public transport directions, voice-guided walk navigation and more.
Nokia considered a big name in maps, and other large tech players have come to Nokia for maps partnerships in the recent past. In October 2012,
partnered with Nokia for its mapping services, and
did the same just a couple of months earlier.
Nokia has also worked with auto companies like BMW, Volkswagen, Korean Hyundai and Mercedes for maps.

The Lumina Win8 Phone app is excellent. I love it. I'd take this ina car sure... but don't most people just use their phones? you really don't need it built in to be honest, I'd rather take the savings myself.

Having it built in avoids arguments about using a cell phone while driving, and, for company cars, it avoids arguments about using data on an employees phone.
Also, you'd find the cost saving would be something like $5.
