The 2DS will be available October 12 for $129.99 USD
Nintendo has announced a new handheld device called the 2DS, and for those who prefer stationary consoles, the
Wii U is getting a price cut
The 2DS has all the same features as
, including two screens (a 3.5-inch upper screen and a 3-inch bottom touchscreen), a dual-core ARM11 MPCore CPU, a Digital Media Professionals PICA200 GPU, included 2GB SD card with 2GB internal flash memory and 128MB FCRAM/6MB VRAM.
The only differences are that the 2DS lacks 3D gaming (as you might've guessed) and the new handheld doesn't fold like previous DS'; it has a fixed, slate-type form factor.
The 2DS will be available in blue and red, and is compatible with 3DS games as well as most DS games. It also allows for wireless connectivity for multiplayer mode.
The 2DS will be available October 12 for $129.99 USD.
Handheld not your thing? Nintendo is also cutting the price of the Wii U next month.
The Deluxe version of the Wii U will get a $50 drop in price from $349.99 USD to $299.99 USD. The bundle -- which includes a a black Wii U console with 32GB of storage, the tablet-style Gamepad controller and a copy of the game "Nintendo Land" -- will be available for the lower price starting September 20.
Nintendo is also launching a limited edition bundle that includes a deluxe console, digital copies of the game "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
(a book chronicling the history of
The Legend of Zelda
series), and a Zelda-themed Gamepad. The bundle will be $300 USD.
Nintendo is also releasing a slew of new games for both the Wii U and 3DS, including “Wii Party U” (coming October 25 in bundle for $50 USD), “Mario Party” for the 3DS (out November 22 for $40 USD), “Super Mario 3D World” (coming November 22 for $60 USD), “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze” (launching December 6 for $50 USD), and “Wii Fit U” (due in the holiday season).
Nintendo is likely cutting the price of the Wii U in an effort to compete with Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One console and Sony's PlayStation 4. Also, a price cut wouldn't hurt sales, considering the gaming company
only sold 160,000 Wii U consoles
in Q2 2013.
As for the 2DS, it likely serves as a more affordable gaming device that also replicates the look and feel of a tablet -- and tablets are being used more and more for gaming, social networking, reading, general Web use, etc.

This is what I wanted. The folding is a pain, since on my original DS, i need a new spring installed. My little cousin would prob like one like this too, since his spring wore out as well. I also hate faddy 3D crap. I intentionally bought my Blu-Ray player because it didn't have 3D. I don't want any industry thinking I want 3D bullshit.
Now I know what machine I'll use to play Ace Attorney 5. I'd love to play it on the WiiU, but as long as Ace Attorney 5 isn't on WiiU at its launch, I won't buy a WiiU.
Yes, I'd buy a console for that one game series. I'll get an XB1 simply because of Forza.

I hear you. I got a PS2 just to play Gran Turismo 3. $5 bargain bin PSX games was a bonus. I haven't gotten a console since but I am considering a WiiU for Mario Kart.
Gran Turismo 6 (if only it were a PS4 title) will be better single player, but Mario Kart will be more fun for the kids.
