Whether the OS is built on Android or something else is unknown

HTC is in the middle of building a smartphone operating system specifically targeted at the Chinese market according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.

The sources claim that HTC chairwoman Cher Wang is currently overseeing the operating system and that it will have deep integration with China specific applications currently available such as Weibo, a microblog that is similar to Twitter. HTC hasn't offered an official timeline for the launch of its homegrown operating system, but the sources claim the OS will launch before the end of the year.

HTC has been having trouble selling smartphones in the global market and developing an operating system specifically for China is far from a surprising move. Chinese government officials have previously stated that they want their own software to reduce the nation's reliance on Android and decrease the need for Western companies.

HTC has been selling devices in China for a number of years, first under the Dopod brand and since 2010 under the HTC banner. It is unknown at this time if the operating system will be an offshoot of Android (like the OS used by Amazon Kindle Fire tablets) or its own homegrown solution.

HTC, like many in the mobile device market, is actively trying to target the Chinese market because it is one of the biggest areas of growth in the world.

It isn't just about another mobile OS, it is about a mobile OS that won't have any apps. An OS without any sort of apps is virtually useless. The other OS's already have many apps created and being used, if HTC creates its own OS that isn't able to use any of the apps that are currently available, how much chance that developers will flock to an OS with a company that is struggling to find itself.

I like HTC and would like to see them succeed but this is already stretching slim resources into an area I don't think they have the expertise in. They make good hardware, they should stick to what they are good at, at least until they are stable before undertaking another whole new line of business.

This only makes sense if HTC is using an Android branch because then they can have their own app store and still use preexisting Android apps.

I know HTC isn't known for being the best, but they can't be dumb enough to start from scratch.

For a company that made the facebook phone, I wouldn't be surprised how stupid they can get.
