No word on when next-generation Titan will launch
Nissan has announced that it will be adding a new Cummins 5.0-liter V8 turbodiesel engine option to its next-generation Titan pickup. The engine will be built at the Columbus Engine Plant currently owned by Cummins.
"This is an exciting announcement for our Cummins team," said Tom Linebarger, Chairman and CEO of Cummins Inc. "We are bringing our innovation and latest technology in engines and after treatment products to a new segment of customers. Importantly, this will help us grow our own business as well as allow us to help an important new partner, Nissan, succeed in the market."
Nissan stopped short of offering any information on the launch of its next-generation Titan, but did say that engineering prototype trucks using the Cummins engine are currently undergoing extensive highway testing.

Cummins began developing the new light-duty diesel engine back in 2006, but the global economic downturn delayed the engine project. Caldwell said during the economic downturn the Cummins team continued to develop the light-duty diesel engine and begin to incorporate specific customer needs once it reached an agreement with Nissan.
It interesting that Nissan has decided to go with a V8 turbodiesel instead of a V6 or inline-6 for light-truck duty. The V8 seems like a bit of overkill for the intended market (Nissan doesn’t have the resources to compete in the heavy-duty pickup market where such an engine would be more at home).
With that being said, Chrysler has already beat Nissan to the punch by putting a
turbodiesel engine into its half-ton Ram 1500 pickup
. However, instead of using Cummins like in years past, the new V6 turbodiesel is built by VM Motorr.

Oh yeah... I wasn't considering the
definition of trucks.
In that case... why did the original poster say it would be a waste to put a V8 in the Titan?
1... The Titan already has a V8 engine
2... Lots of 1/2 tons have V8 engines

It has a gas V8. Not quite the same thing. A modern 5.0L Cummins V8 diesel is going to produce "only" decent horsepower but way, waaay more torque. So the two are hardly comparably, especially in a truck, where torque is crucial. Their current DOHC gas V8 mill only makes 317 HP and 385 ft-lbs, and gets horrible fuel economy in the process. This 5.0L diesel is probably going to be overkill for this truck. Maybe they'll tune it conservatively, though. I'd still take it over their sorely-needs-an-update 5.6L gas engine.
Dodge is doing pretty well with their new baby diesel though. They say it makes 240HP and
of torque out of a little 3.0L V6 diesel. That's plenty for a 1500, and I'll bet it gets great fuel economy while still being able to haul a decent load.
Oh, and I like what GM has done with their smallblocks. The direct injected 5.3L smallblock is now pushing 355hp/383ft-lbs, while returning very good fuel economy. That's out of a still-very-compact pushrod design. Great power density. I'm willing to bet this is going to be a popular motor for engine swaps into vehicles with small bays (Miata, RX, etc).

You spell it out much better than the original poster's comment: "
Why v8? That makes no sense.
Again... thanks for the info!
