Brilliant game developer says Microsoft cloud computing does not appear to give the Xbox One a significant edge

Gaming legend and id Software Technical Director/cofounder John Carmack at his QuakeCon 2013 keynote offered up his thoughts on Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Xbox One and Sony Corp.'s (TYO:6758) PlayStation 4, which will be waging war this holiday season for dominance in the eight generation of home video game consoles.

He led off by saying that he hadn't done enough head to head benchmarks to make direct comparisons between the consoles.  But based on his experience (Mr. Carmack still remains actively involved in programming top id Software titles and pioneering new graphics techniques) he says he believes they're "very close" in capabilities and that "they're both very good".

In some ways this comparison is bad news for Microsoft as it calls into queston the company's claims that its console is five times as powerful when connected to the cloud as when processing offline (if anyone would fully leverage the Xbox One's full potential, it would likely be Mr. Carmack).

Also bad news for Microsoft is Mr. Carmack's dour assessment of the Kinect sensor.  Aside from concerns regarding "always on" U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) spying (Microsoft has a major voluntary data sharing agreement with the NSA, reportedly), Mr. Carmack offers criticism of the controls themself, stating, "[The Kinect 2 is] kind of like a zero-button mouse with a lot of latency on it."

The PS4 appears to enjoy a moderate lead in preorders over the Xbox One.

For the unitiated, you may ask why listen to Mr. Carmack.  Well, he coded a hardware-optimized build of Wolfenstein 3D for the iPhone in 4 days, when it was estimated to take a full team of programmers two months to perform a basic (unoptimized) port.

Rage really felt like a demo that ID could do something similar to Borderlands but fell short I don't think it was as bad as a lot of the reviews but it wasn't great either. The Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein franchises probably keep the money rolling in and then you have third party COD used the Doom engine he also gave it away for free under the GPL.

Regardless of the guy being able to tell a story he's more than capable of analyzing the abilities of the consoles.

That's like saying I need Mario Andretti to tell me what my next car purchase should be.

The man did great things for the early-years of PC gaming, no doubt. But his time has passed. And I don't see how that qualifies him as some sort of professional console critic.

Carmack has these visionary-like ideas, but can never seen to flush them out and make them work in the real world (ID Tech 5). So when I see him claiming the XbOne's cloud rendering thingy could be the game changer, I think 'here we go again'. Because there's just no way that feature is, in reality, going to work for the benefit of the average user as much as they claim.

You don't see how a guy, widely hailed as a genius writing code for hardware, is qualified to make substantial and authoritative claims about writing code for hardware?

You may as well wonder what Einstein knew about physics.

A genius? Maybe 10 years ago. Let me fill you in on what Carmack has been doing these days:

1 – Graphic technologies that haven’t really turned out to be very useful.
2 – The games they are used in have been mediocre.

First it was "professional console critic" and now it's "ultimate authority"? Which red herring are you going to conflate this into next? Lord God On High Carmack?

He's not a deity or some ancient European noble. He's a guy with a proven and amazing understanding of relationships between hardware and software, and that alone makes his statements worth listening to. It's a shame you dislike what he says to the point that you'll fly into this sort of petty, delusional tantrum and make shit up to fit your bias.

Uneducated how?

Look the man had his time, I'm not disputing that. And I enjoyed that early games as much as anyone.

But like that guy said, he's like Chuck Norris now. Living on reputation alone. His recent endeavors have been horrible and fruitless.

Is he even actively coding for either console? Your argument is basically saying because he's experienced in other areas, he's automatically an expert on the next-gen consoles. Absurd and the worst kind of appeal to authorities.

And knowing you, let's be honest, the only reason you're even arguing with me is because he's backing your Lord and Savior Microsoft's console.

The dude won the X-Prize just a few years ago.

What has changed with FPS that's worth changing them? Why not ride the franchise wave like EA and every other studio does?

The reality is the PS4 and the XBONE are very close in performance regardless games will be written with the lowest performing console then may just maybe some eye candy added the more powerful but not enough that anyone will notice or care.

Im buying a XBONE because my family loves Kinect and I like the HDMI input abilities. If I want to game hardcore Ill play on my PC with eyefinity.

You're delusional, man. The guy pointed out what many others have already pointed out: That there's not a huge difference in the hardware. You can scream "50% more shaders!" and "Moar RAM bandwidths!" 'til your face is purple, but that'll only show how poorly you, yourself, Reclaimer77, understand the issue.
