Jonney Shih on Windows RT: “The result is not very promising,”
ASUS chairman Jonney Shih has announced that his company is pulling away from Windows RT. The chairman says that one of the only bets he's made in the technology industry that didn't pan out was Windows RT.
Shih isn't saying that ASUS is ruling out future Windows RT products, but his company is putting the bulk of its energy and money into devices running Intel chips.
ASUS isn't alone in pulling away from Windows RT; Lenovo recently
online sales of its Yoga 11 Windows RT tablet. Microsoft itself is also facing challenges in selling Windows RT devices and recently
cut the base price
for its Surface RT tablet to $349 in the U.S.

Microsoft was also forced to take a
$900 million write-down
due to its inability to sell sufficient volumes of the Surface Tablet.
Shih also pointed a finger at Microsoft for missteps with Windows 8, noting that one of its most popular apps is one to bring back the classic Start menu (this “misstep” is
being addressed with Windows 8.1
ASUS recently unveiled a new machine called the
Transformer Book Trio
running both Windows and Android operating systems. The chairman also noted that ASUS is considering building 10-inch and eight-inch Windows tablets, but admits the 10-inch may be the better choice.

8.1 doesn't improve much ...

The problem with Windows 8 is not just the lack of a start button. The problems are many:
- Lack of an efficient start-menu, the whole full screen stuff takes up way too much space. The fact that it hides what I'm doing sucks. And it requires way too much mouse movement.
- The "Metro" look-and-feel may look nice on a phone, but on my laptop or desktop is looks like something a 6 year old made. Every time one of the Metro dialogs pops up, I hate the fact that the amount of information is so limited. E.g. I hate the new wireless connection pop-up menu/list/dialog/whatever.
- I dislike the Windows store where Microsoft attempts to channel software through their store and take a cut from it. While this may work for Apple (even though I don't like it), it breaks with everything a PC is.
- I truly hate that you are never more than a few keyclicks away from an "in-app" purchase in the store. I did pay for Windows - I don't want ads for software popping up during my normal use.

The Windows store is also slow when you compare that to Google play. And the organization really needs work. I have 2 Windows 8 tablets (don't ask why) running Windows 8 Pro, and from time to time the Metro UI app crashes for no reason. Meanwhile, all legacy desktop applications and games run great in desktop mode. Looks like there is system stability issue with Metro UI as well.
