Facebook might be in for some backlash with move to video advertisements
A lot of people have a love/hate relationship with
. Many people claim to despise the site as a boastful waste of time and energy, while others cling to the site to peruse over pictures of friends and family, or reposted memes from George Takei.
However you feel about Facebook, one thing is certain -- the News Feed is about to get a whole lot more annoying thanks to new video ads.
According to a
Facebook News Feed
would be home to 15-second advertisements. No more than three of the 15-second ads will be shown over the course of the day, but to many people; one is already too much.
The monetary potential for Facebook with this move is huge. The company has over 1.5 billion users, and roughly 61 percent of those users visit the site at least once a day. Each ad is expected to fetch between $1 million to $2.5 million per day, so Facebook stands to profit handsomely from this new venture.
With many eyeballs scanning Facebook instead of (or in addition to) television screens during primetime hours, they also stand to benefit from reaching a broad customer base. “Every night, 88 million to 100 million people are actively using Facebook during prime-time TV hours in the United States alone,” said Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg last week.

I really don't get it. The virulent hate for Facebook and people who use Facebook whenever this topic comes up on DailyTech is just obscene. And yet Twitter, which is just and mindless forum for people spewing random bullcrap with zero interaction, is basically unscathed.
Also the OP has conveniently grouped people into two groups: those who use Facebook and don't interact with people in real life, and those who don't use Facebook and have supreme people skills and social interaction.
Uhh if you believe things are that simple and people are that two dimensional, you're an idiot.
And it's really a hypocritical viewpoint on technology, border-lining on being Luddites. A few examples:
Hey do you have a Netflix, Crackle, Hulu, etc etc account and watch streaming movies? Well you should get a life, and learn how to go out and interact with people and go to the movies!
Do you email? Why can't you take the time to write a letter? Stop being anti-social!
Online gaming? You guessed it! Go play outside you hermit, but just don't get on mgilbert's lawn!!

I have to disagree here. It's still socializing but it puts limits on socializing. It reframes (to the company's liking) what it means to socialize.
At least in real life you can have conversations with people that you might not want others to hear. For instance, I'll say things to my friends that I'd never say in front of people at work. I have my real friends and then I have work acquaintances, then I have people that I know but don't hang out with. I'd love to post pictures of myself partying with my friends, but it's hard to do that when you have your manager as your friend on Facebook. You don't want to defriend him because he might really be a good guy, you don't feel comfortable letting him see you drunk and acting silly.
I don't think it's compartmentalized enough. It's like throwing your boss, your coworkers, your girlfriend, and your buddies all into one room where everyone can see how you act in front of everyone else. It forces you to act bland.

Err, you do realize that you can create lists of people, and then choose which security setting a particular post/picture/whatever has? Or create groups for like-minded activities, that are limited only to members of that group?
Sheesh. At least have a basic understanding of the technology before badmouthing it.
