It will be released in the U.S. during Q2 2014

BMW announced today that the electric i3 will go on sale in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2014.

The BMW i3 will have an abundance of features, such as three trim levels (Mega, Giga and Tera). It will also sport a 22-kilowatt, 450-pound lithium ion battery, which will provide power to a rear-mounted electric motor. The i3 packs 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, allowing the single-gear i3 to accelerate from 0-30 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and 0-60 mph in about 7.0 seconds. However, its top speed is 93 MPH. 


The i3 has an electric range of 80-100 miles, and the battery can be charged with a standard system in about three hours. For those who need faster charging, there's the SAE DC Combo Fast Charger for a full charge in only 30 minutes. An optional 34-hp, 650cc two-cylinder generator can be added for additional range. 

The EV will also offer its LifeDrive architecture, which is the overall design of the vehicle through the Life Module and the Drive Module. The Life Module is the first mass-produced monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), and it's 30 percent lighter than aluminum for an overall weight of 2,700 pounds. The Drive Module, on the other hand, is an aluminum chassis placed under the Life Module, and it contains parts like the battery. 


"The new all-electric BMW i3 is a landmark in BMW's mission to provide a completely sustainable, electric vehicle that still stays true to the Ultimate Driving Machine moniker," said BMW. "The BMW i3 is the first product of the new BMW i sub-brand, and is a truly purpose built electric car. It's a new era for electro mobility at BMW."

The i3 will have a price tag of $41,350 when released in the U.S. during Q2 2014.

No ice can be as smooth as an electric motor. Electric motors have literally a flat torque curve. No ICE engine have accomplished that. The 1 gear in EVs have no shifts.

I think the only smoothness an ICE can have is how it modulates the throttle to blend the changes of acceleration better. However, EVs can do that too. It should be even easier to do since an electric motor and 1 gear transmission should be much more predictable. The software controlling it is probably not as matured since all these EVs have just launched and in their first generation.

Yup, not even close to being possible. A lot of the "smoothness" of luxury ICE engines is in the sound insulation and vibration dampening engine mounts.

If smooth is your objective, go for it. Me, I far prefer cost-effectiveness and practicality.

I said I COULD NOT TELL !!! Read people! Besides, that's irrelevant cause I didn't like the cars I drove. They were BORING and STERILE. It's Toyota Camry boring. Cars I drove:

1. Tesla Model S
2. Nissan Leaf
3. Chevy Volt

Model S is far from boring. It's roughly the performance of a v6 midsize luxury sports sedan.

The volt is meh and it was made to be. It wasn't meant to be exciting.

The leaf is straight up about savings.

What did you expect? Calling the model S boring and sterile as the Camry....i don't know what you were smoking there. My parents have the new camry and accord. I drove my firend's Model S. The Model S is undoubtedly better and almost as practical.

A V6 Accord Coupe with 6 speed manual is quite fun. A total sleeper too. 14 flat @ 103 in the 1/4 is pretty damn quick for a non-sporting car.

I personally dislike FWD.

The Accord is way ahead of the Camry, IMO. That's not really saying much, though.

We'll just differ on this. I expected something else when driving the Model S and I was very disappointed. It's well made and very nice looking though. Maybe I'll need a Panamera EV to make me happy with EV's. So far they all suck IMO.

First person I've heard call the Tesla boring.
I didn't get to drive one but I rode in one and I can tell you it was fast and fun.

0-60 in 4 seconds and quarter mile in 12.5. Yeah that's boring and sterile.

Yes but so what?

It's still like driving a sewing machine. Where's the rev of the engine? Where's the rowing through the gears or the climb of revs before a shift? Where's the excitement?

Where's all the motor-heads at. I don't understand this generation. What's there to get excited about in an electric vehicle?

There's something wondrous about an engine with hundreds of moving parts, violently exploding internally thousands of times a minute...pushing cams...and - oh god - turning a crank aaand AAAAAAAHHKDLFJ;dlsJKFKLJFj;!!!!!!!!!

whew, sorry about that. I need to go shower now.
