Chromecast is reportedly available on BestBuy.com right now
Earlier this week, Google officially unveiled its new media streaming stick called the
. The device looks like a standard flash drive designed to connect directly to the HDMI port of a HDTV or computer monitor. Once connected to a display device, the Chromecast allows users to stream video from sources like YouTube and Netflix to the TV directly from their smartphone.
During the initial launch promotion for Google's new media streaming stick, it was offering three months of free Netflix video streaming service to both new and existing customers. That was approximately a $24 value in free streaming content for purchasing the $35 Chromecast. However, it looks as though customer demand has put a swift end to the Netflix promotion.
"Due to overwhelming demand for Chromecast devices since launch, the 3-month Netflix promotion (which was available in limited quantities) is no longer available," Google told the
in a statement.
Google also offered some clarification, stating that all users who purchased the Chromecast before the promotion ended will be able to redeem their three free months of Netflix streaming video service.

To each his own, I guess.
In any case, we're talking a wireless router and a TV as the minimum required hardware. Then you can choose to add a HTPC or a phone/tablet using MHL or a phone/tablet+Chromecast. Theoretically, you could stream through a phone/tablet over 4G, but at current rates, I'll leave that option aside.
To me, the smart TV option still looks better than the others. Just because it's simpler (where available).

That, and most connected device have it too. My TiVo and ps3 can stream netflix, and amazon... The TiVo ui is awful, but ps3 is pretty good. Its a great option for those that don't, or those that suck. Also portable and cheap enough to buy just in case you wind up somewhere and need it... Business trips etc...

Well you can either buy a $35 Chromecast or throw out your TV and buy a new 'smart' TV. You decide....
IMHO, $99 for an appleTV makes a ton more sense since it supports to much more functionality. Hardware remote, appstore, itunes, youtube, netflix, wired + wifi, optical, supports 1080p movies, etc...
"Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." -- Steve Ballmer
