Hardware Yet Another AMD EOL Notification

Farewell Socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and 4600+

DailyTech previously reported 95 end-of-life AMD products less than 24 hours ago. We received another AMD PCN this morning claiming end-of-life on the rest of AMD’s Socket 939 lineup. The last two Socket 939 products in AMD's stable will be the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and 4600+. These two processors will reach end-of-life on June 30th, 2007 with the previously reported Athlon 64 X2 4800+. The last day to place an order on the processors will be December 27th, 2006. After that date distributors will no longer be able to order Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 4600+ and 4800+ models.

AMD claims the reason for the discontinuation is simply that "AMD will no longer manufacturer these processors." 

The Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 4600+ and 4800+ will be the last Socket 939 processors to be discontinued by AMD. This will be the final nail in the coffin for Socket 939 as AMD has moved on with Socket AM2. Strangely AMD has announced its Commercial Stable Image Platform Program certified systems based on NVIDIA Business Platform motherboards and Socket 939 processors have been deemed as having excellent stability yet the current required processors are nearing end-of-life.

Seriously. I hoped they actually planned out this contingency. And I really hope they offer something better than a super-pi performance boost next generation.

The only difference is DDR2. So by the end of next year all AM2 sockets and CPU's will be discontinued to force people into buying AM3 cpu's and sockets. AMD is doing what Intel did years ago and soon they will realize that that is going to do them in as Intel has gotten their shit together and can put a sizeable dent into AMD's marketshare.

Shame on you AMD for becoming what you used to hate.

AM3 CPUs will work in AM2 sockets. The HT will be slower than if you placed the CPU in an AM3 board, but at least it's still compatible.

And is still doing or you already forgotten that Conroe requires new mobos and chipsets for the SAME socket and memory type.

Not really.

The people bought 939 over 754 to get DUAL CHANNEL memory which 754 couldn't do.

Remember that an EOL notice just means you can't buy it any more.

If you already bought the chip and system, it won't suddenly stop working. It will CONTINUE to process data, play games etc.

All IT purchases depreciate in value over time (except collectors item vintage). This is expected.

939 was the best available at the time. I hardly think someone would be kicking themselves or regret that decision. It's not like AMD didn't announce this generally ages ago and it is the one reason I don't have a 939. I held off waiting for AM2.

Times have changed. The CURRENT best option from AMD is AM2 (or the new 1207 pin Opteron socket).

It is natural for products to be phased out. At least with AMD it was quite planned and communicated.

In any case if you're bothered, I imagine there will be a very healthy trade in second-user 939 components as high end users trade up to AM2 etc. This should ensure that if you REALLY want or need 939 chips you will find them somewhere.

I bought 939 to get dual channel memory, which was then negated by AM64's on die memory controller.

There just wasn't anything but really cheap S754 boards. The higher-end features only came in S939.

The price drops better occur then or else i'm screwed, because today I sold off my p4 board and chip and bought their replacement board and video card.

Still have my current system, but really hope to get an X2 4200+ or 4600+ at the lower prices.

The announcement says June 2007, not 2006. These 939 X2's will continue to be produced for another 11 months. The 939 price cuts will most likely occur on the 23rd as expected unless AMD changes their mind which is highly unlikely at this point otherwise we'd have probably seen an announcement to the contray.

Prices will likely continue to drop, albeit not drastically like they will on the 23rd, for the next 11 months until production ceases. At that point there likely won't be much demand except in the enthusiast market for them and they'll simply disappear and be removed from stocks.

Maybe they mean these processors will be available through HP or whoever made the PCs by way of special order from AMD, just not from AMD themselves in retail. Also, 939 Opterons will be around for a long time, since they are "business" class.

Opeterons are getting cut too. Many are in list of the 95. Thye will go a bit slower since the server class chipset is not ready. Its not big deal really. So a reseller can't buy a chip thats out now in 6 months. Most try not to stock up on old chips anyway. Most reseller will try to move out that invertory as soon as thney can anyway. I understand you can upgrade your slower chips but how many people really do. I might upgrade a chip maybe once in 4 years. I usually get a new motherboard when I do. I have a Opt 144 so I can get nice X2 anytime I want for the next 6 months. After that I'm sure the nice chip will last you until AM3 comes outs. If you already got AM2 then your set for bit as well. Don't see the big deal.

What abou the FX60?

AMD didn't tell anything about discontinuing the best 939 processor... FX60, did they forgot it? lol

AMD is really trimming the fat off their processes. First there were the 2x1MB chips, all 754 processors and now several 939s are on the list. They are seriously planning on competing well with Intel in this upcoming price war; we've already seen AMD reduce their forecasts for Q2. I haven't heard anything from Intel, but I can only imagine a similar circumstance is in store for them. Even with all the trimming, AMD is probably mostly making sure their next-gen stuff will show up on time. I bet Hector is having a few sleepness nights.
