Developer kit functionality won't be available at launch

There were a lot of independent developers out there who were unhappy when Microsoft announced that they would need a publisher to get video games onto the Xbox One game console. Thankfully, Microsoft has now changed its mind with an announcement that every Xbox One game console will be able to make video games.

These independently developed video games will be made available via Xbox Live. However, there is a bit of a caveat -- the devkit functionality for the Xbox One won't come at launch. Microsoft plans to add that capability at some undefined later date.

"Our vision is that every person can be a creator,” said Microsoft a statement. “That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We'll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August."

Microsoft's Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten told Kotaku, "My goal is for it to just show up in the marketplace. Of course there will be different pivots inside of that. There will be everything from what are we curating, kind of like spotlight content, to the normal discoverability stuff like recommendations, what's trending, what's got a lot of engagement on the platform."

Whether or not Microsoft will charge developers to publish their games directly remains to be seen. Whitten also says that he hopes some sort of certification system will be required for independent games to be published to ensure that there is no IP infringement or other issues with content published to the Xbox One.

Your vision is wrong because xbox one has more than 50% of the graphics power of ps4. Xbox probably cost the same as a ps4 without the kinect. device. Kinect spying on customers or NSA using kinect is nothing more than tinfoil hat speculation at this moment.

Nobody asked you to buy the xbox. If you cared so much about graphics power and memory bandwidth so much then buy the ps4 or a pc.

the xbox bash rants are getting old. At least come up with something new.

The only true differentiator the One has is HDMI In, which is something Google TV and then Wii U were doing before the One was even announced. I really wished Sony snuck it on to the final PS4 hardware (it's pretty cheap to do) just to take the wind out of MS's sails and troll them super hardcore.

Because once the hardware's out of the way (and PS4 has a Kinect-like hardware option), all that's needed is a competent firmware group* to put out the features such as "TV integration," gesture controls, etc. Skype itself is a pretty cool feature though, and would be almost impossible to match even though it's just software.

*this is where the trouble comes in for Sony, rofl

Correction: Wii U doesn't do its TV integration with HDMI In. Wow that system gets stupider every time I look into it lol.

Ive owned Eye Toy and its ok it only really differentiates the background from the foreground through asking you to leave and then come back. I haven't seen any improvements announced for it. It not anywhere near Kinect otherwise they would be crowing about it. The know when it comes to motion sensing Microsoft holds all the cards.

I personally see 3 big differences Skype, Kinect 2.0, and HDMI In. But your also paying for them an extra $100.00

If you have any family members into dance games you have to go with Kinect over anything else. The latest version can tell rotation of limbs accuracy is just crazy Engadget even says its borderline freaky what they can do with Kinect 2.0. This round though it looks like they may get Kinect to do some additional things Im hoping leaning will cause the character to lean in FPS games.

Also nearly everyone I know uses Skype and why not the thing has a camera and skype is huge so why not leverage it.

The HDMI in just just that extra candy when your gaming and not gaming. Will it replace my remote will wait and see for that.

Both are going to be great and a lot of fun Im not sure why anyone has to pick a side.

The Eye Toy is nothing like the PS4 Eye. A lot of improvements have been announced. I doubt it's advanced as Kinect 2, but it does in fact offer similar functionality.

So the fact remains that if they snuck in HDMI In, Sony could reasonably answer to every XBO differentiator except Skype. I don't find Sony to be particularly clever or aggressive though, so MS doesn't really have anything to worry about lol. I was just saying.

Xbox One memory performance improved for production console
The 32MB of "embedded static RAM" within the Xbox One processor aims to make up the difference, and was previously thought to sustain a peak theoretical throughput of 102GB/s - useful, but still some way behind the 176GB/s found in PlayStation 4's RAM set-up. Now that close-to-final silicon is available, Microsoft has revised its own figures upwards significantly, telling developers that 192GB/s is now theoretically possible.

Its irrelevant though I doubt we will see any game that cant be ported to either console. Game engines can reduce a non-factor eye candy item in game if needed.
