HTC One Mini will launch in August

The One has been very successful for HTC and is currently available in 181 countries and on over 583 mobile networks around the world. One of the few complaints about the HTC One is that the device is too large to fit comfortably into a pocket and HTC has answered that complaint with the new One Mini.
Features include:
  • 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 Processor
  • 1GB system RAM
  • 4.3" 720p display
  • 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, and an LTE radio
  • 1800 mAh battery
  • 4MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera
  • Android 4.2.2
The HTC one measures 132 x 63.2 x 9.25 mm and weighs 4.3 ounces.

"We are proud to be behind the market's leading smartphone and now, with the addition of the HTC One mini, the best smartphone family in the world," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. "The HTC One mini embodies everything that makes the HTC One a success on a smaller but equally eye-catching scale."

The HTC One Mini is available in glacial silver or stealth black colors. Like its slightly bigger brother, the body of the phone is made from aluminum and the device has a slim profile with tapered edges. HTC’s BoomSound feature gives the device dual front stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier for improved sound quality. The phone also has integrated Beats Audio technology.

The device will launch in select markets in August, confirming previous rumors, and will begin a global rollout in September with pricing unannounced.

This would be a decent argument if there was no such thing as a phone smaller than the One, lol. But yeah, maybe you're right and they were constrained by the front-speaker setup or the camera or something.

I still hate it. I love the One, but this single thing messes up my head lol. I refuse to believe there's nothing they could've done.

With comparable specs? I can't name one off the top of my head.
Remember, manufacturers have opted to remove radio and microSD card support just to save some space. It's really crowded in there.

The iPhone 5 has comparable specs in a 4" package. If I recall, the iPhone 5's CPU is still upper-midrange competitve (with the Nexus 4), and the GPU is competitive with Adreno 320 (Snapdragon 600), which is the best the Android world can offer right now as far as I know.

It is a little smaller, but it sacrifices 25% battery capacity for that. And my point wasn't that the One mini is as small as it gets, just that phones having comparable specs aren't usually much smaller.

Smaller battery, but has some of the better battery life out there according to Anandtech. It's all a matter of efficiency.

It's using a CPU with 1/2 the cores, and clocked lower as well... Also, the GPU is far slower as well, so it should be pretty efficient. Also, sufficient for most people. 2 cores@1.4ghz runs Android fine if the carrier doesnt bloat it out (cough Samsung cough)

That only matters if the performance isn't there. Based on Anandtech's benchmarks (I scanned the Nexus 4 review as well as the S4 review before I first posted), the iPhone 5 actually delivers competitive performance, regardless of its decidedly mid-end spec (by mid 2013 standards). In fact, the GPU is rarely out of the top 5 in any test.

Based on the CPU results in Anandtech's S4 review ( can't post because DT thinks it's spam... funny. ), the iPhone 5 is at best comparable to an S4, and at worst only slightly slower than the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 isn't a top of the line phone, but it still has specs that are better than the One mini.

Based on the GPU results in the same S4 review, the iPhone 5 is able to outrun the Adreno 320 in 4 out of 5 offscreen (read: all 1080p) tests.

The battery life numbers in the same review show that the iPhone is usually right behind the RAZR MAXX in all but talk time.

I know the iPhone 5 isn't on most DT readers' radar, but the performance and battery life numbers are still (nearly 1 yr after it debuted) decidedly in the upper end range of the spectrum. It's simply shameful that no other manufacturer is able to create a phone in the same size class as the iPhone 5 while retaining its level of performance or battery life.

Btw, 'size class' is a loose definition, given that the One mini has 40% greater volume than the iPhone 5. This is based only on screen size.

I was probably not following the thread clearly... I was comparing the One mini the the One standard when I said it has 1/2 the cores and a far lesser GPU, so it should consume alot less power than the One standard.

The iPhone has its merits... If the ton of missing features aren't features you want, and you like small phones with less resolution and DPI than the competition, its a great phone. Fast as hell and super efficient.

Last I checked, the iPhone 5 had a giant lower bezel to accommodate, of all things, a mechanical button, so irrelevant to this discussion.

He/she asked for a phone with better specs/performance in a similar size class. That was all I was pointing out. Whether or not you like the physical button is irrelevant.
