ABB will supply Fastned charging stations with fast EV chargers
The Netherlands will receive fast electric vehicle (EV)
about 50 kilometers apart along all highways this fall.
Fastned, a Dutch start-up for nationwide charging infrastructure, chose automation technologies company ABB to supply EV chargers to its 200 stations all along Dutch highways.
The ABB chargers will be models like the 50 kilowatt Terra 52 and Terra 53, which can charge EVs in as little as 15-30 minutes. ABB employs a multi-standard design that allows the chargers to be compatible with EVs made in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
The ABB fast chargers will also have "remote assistance, management and servicing and smart software upgrades."
These chargers will be placed in Fastned charging stations, which are being built about 50 kilometers apart on highways in the Netherlands for convenience. These stations, which will have solar canopies for even greater use of renewable energy, will be complete in 2015.
This work stems from a request from Fastned to the Ministry of Infrastructure for an EV charging network back in 2011. This was granted in December 2011, when the ministry said Fastned could deploy such tech at 245 service stations on Dutch highways. Fastned is placing its infrastructure at 201 locations.
“This countrywide network of locations will lay the basis for the commercially viable development of e-mobility,” said Bart Lubbers, one of Fastned’s founders. “I foresee a race towards faster charging and larger batteries throughout the car industry.”
Adding charging infrastructure is a big deal if governments and automakers want to sell EVs, and many efforts are being put forth everywhere to add convenient stations for consumers. For instance, the European Union said in January that it wants to
add 500,000 EV charging stations
There are also other charging options available, such as
Bosch's $3,000 USD wireless EV charging system
Tesla's swappable battery
for Model S sedans, which allows customers to bypass charging altogether and just swap a drained battery for a charged one at a station on the road.
The ABB chargers are expected to ship starting September 2013.

The founder of FastNed is the son of former prime minister Ruud Lubbers. The government is going to heavily subsidize this if the land is given to the exploiters for free (as that link says). Since land is very expensive here.
Even though our politicians can be monumentally stupid when it comes to running a country they're suddenly quite smart when it comes to helping friends into cosy positions. This'll get pushed through one way or the other. If the judge says no, the politicians will just change the law.
