Toyota's Prius Hybrid Crosses 3 Million Unit Threshold in Worldwide Sales

It's a good day for Toyota and electric vehicles (EVs) in general as the Prius has managed to hit 3 million sales total.
Toyota announced that its full hybrid electric Prius passed the 3 million worldwide cumulative sales mark at the end of June. The automaker also said that it would spend a consolidated 890 billion yen on environmental technology development in the fiscal year ending March 2014.
It also plans to make consolidated capital expenditure investments of 910 billion yen, with about 440 billion yen invested in Japan. That's a 7 percent and 9 percent increase respectively year-on-year.
The Prius first went on sale in Japan in 1997 and the U.S. in 2000. The current Toyota Prius received an EPA-rated 51 MPG city/49 MPG highway, which is a 22 percent boost from the last generation.
Last November, reports started circulating that Toyota was readying the fourth generation Prius -- and that it would
achieve 60 MPH
Toyota is also working to make sure that it stays on top of the green car game. Back in May of this year, it announced that it would build a new production line for about 20 billion yen ($194 million USD) in an effort to
increase lithium-ion battery production
to 200,000 per year.
At that time,
reported that Toyota's Prius line accounted for 70 percent of the 5 million gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles the company has sold since they launched in 1997.
In January of this year, Toyota's Prius was named the
best-selling vehicle in California
with 60,688 units sold.

you are comparing apples to bananas. those past cars are much lighter due to less safety and creature comfort features, less safe by design, and more polluting than cars of today

The real truth of the matter. The environmentalists don't really care how much we spend on gas or any nonsense about energy security. It's really all about the emissions, and more specifically, the carbon dioxide. Other emissions from traditional gasoline cars have been reduced to the point of near non-existence.
Carbon dioxide is non-toxic.
It is safely used without a warning label as a propellant in a large variety of products. We breath it out when we exhale. You notice that there is no credibility given to the nut cases that say nobody should breed or that we should institute planetary compulsive birth control. So why is it bad that cars do what humans have been doing for eons, except on a much larger scale?
Climate change is what they'll say. I'm not denying that it is happening, and I won't go into any discussion of its potentially anthropogenic causes. However, the climate of the Earth is always in a state of flux. I ask this of the environmentalists: when is it that we should have stopped the climate from changing? 1950? 1800? The middle ages? The pleistocene period (just after the last ice age)?
This planet will change.
We need to accept that.
Whether or not we humans are the ultimate cause of the change is irrelevant. We need to stop telling others what to do with all these green regulations and restrictions just out of nature worship and human self-loathing. Carbon taxing and trading systems are just scams to make the rich richer. Most of the car-cutting gas-reducing proposals are class warfare, pure and simple. The people who use the most energy are those who can't afford to get more efficient technology. They still farm by hand in Africa. Why? They cannot afford the tractors and fuel to do it the modern, productive way. The poor drive 20 year old SUVs because that is what they can afford. Because they are the least desirable and thus cheapest vehicles.
Ugh, I just felt like a rant today. At least I feel better.
