The controllers may make an appearance at WWDC

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) has focused a lot on software, such as iOS 7 and Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, and while there have been a lot of Mac and Macbook hardware updates, there appears to be no iOS gadgets on the horizon -- except, just maybe, iOS game controllers.

According to Touch Arcade, Apple's developer site now has a set of guidelines on how game controllers for the new iOS 7 should work. This likely explains why game controllers were briefly mentioned in the WWDC keynote two days ago.

The guidelines are vague. They offer a few drawings that show a standalone game controller with dual analong sticks and another controller that fits over your iPhone, allowing you to see your screen.

Apple mentioned that any games made for the iPhone with a controller must be capable of being played without it.

Touch Arcade added that actual iOS controllers are mysteriously hiding somewhere at WWDC, waiting to be revealed at a later date.

Since they have a cross licencing agreement in place with Microsoft, I guess they don't feel bad about ripping off the Xbox 360 controller.

That second reference looks almost identical in button layout. Even the ABXY buttons are in the same place, orientation and color scheme.

It looks more like everything else, without the Xbox controller's quiet genius of simply flipping the positions of the d-pad and left analog.

Quiet genius, which MS quietly stole from Nintendo's Gamecube controller? ;)

I'm more surprised that Apple did not mandate that controllers be white, shiny and have only one button... ;)

You don't have to tell me; I loved the GameCube.

Did you actually READ the damn document?

The very first line is "This is a preliminary document for an API or technology in development"
It's an API document targeting GAME DEVELOPERS. It describes how software will connect to these devices. It says nothing about what the devices look like, not even about their electrical connections and suchlike.

The only reason the pictures exist in the document is to give the reader an idea of what the document is about.

Looks more like a Wii Controller (and by proxy a SNES remote) than it ever will look like a 360 controller
