"Industry insiders" predict a possible Nintendo Wii launch in September or October

Nintendo’s Wii may be released earlier than expected if the latest reports are accurate.  Chris Morris, writer of's Game Over column, has written an article about the possibility of the Nintendo Wii game console launching a month or two earlier than expected.  Although the Wii had been originally expected sometime in November, with no official release noted by Nintendo, Morris says a release in September or October is not unrealistic.  A June 21 analyst's note claims that Nintendo is already manufacturing Wii console units that are final retail units.  According to the editorial on CNN:

Indeed, the company appears to be already manufacturing final retail units of the Wii, according to a June 21st analyst's note from P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research. That would give it a significant head start over Sony, which has yet to begin final manufacturing of the PlayStation 3.  Microsoft's first Xbox 360 did not roll off the assembly line last year until 69 days before the on sale date of Nov. 22. (That late start in production is the root cause behind last holiday's shortages.)

With the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console being the only next-generation console on the market today, gamers are anxiously awaiting console releases from Nintendo and Sony.  The $250 USD price tag alone has made the Wii an appealing console for many potential gamers.  Nintendo is hoping to have enough units in stock after the console is released to combat extremely low supplies that sometimes plague other console releases.

While the Supernintendo was the last nintendo console that I purchased the Wii looks damn fine I must say. Affordable and fun to play. While it may not have the graphics of the future, as long as nintendo keeps the game play top notch... and throw out a few of those barney games, I will be on the bandwagon as well.

Although I am still definitely getting a PS3. The future of online games will change dramatically from what it was in the PS2 days. Think of something along the lines of MGS4 CO-OP or possibly a scenario where you are the enemy and your friend is snake trying to take you down. hmm... with people understanding coding more intimately... the cell processor will exceed that of the 360 or (obviously) the Wii. While it's more complex to code for... there are advantages to that.

Future of online gaming will not be on the consoles. Wii perhaps (SMB or Mario Cart online!!!), but PS3/XBox's online games are seriously lacking.

It costs less to build a budget brand new PC ($500 or less) just for online gaming and web surfing than buying a PS3 or Xbox360.

Sure you can build one for $500... but it certiantly wont do anything close to what the PS3 will be capable of. Atleast not right now. Maybe a $500 pc down (like 3-4 years from now) will change that... but as for now, PS3, hands down, has any 500-600 dollar PC beat. (in terms of games)

World of Warcraft, CS, Guild Wars, etc, will probably not be ported to PS3, and I doubt anyone want to play these games using a PS3 controller instead of mouse + keyboard.

Playstations are always great for single player games such as RPGs, but never excel in FPS or MMORPG.

As for porting those popular games, yah you're probably right it won't happen. But who's to say that PS3 will not have a keyboard or mouse to use? I mean common the PS2 has a keyboard already and correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it have a mouse too?

<reality check>
So you've played games on the PS3 already? Awesome
</reality check>

It wouldn't hurt if you headed on over to arstechnica and looked at a direct screen comparison of the new Prey demo on a $500ish PC and on a 360.

Plus the PS3 will be more expensive than $500.
Plus if, and when, the PS3 is released in 5 months you'll have dual core processors available for ~$150 making a system even more attractive.

The argument for consoles should be the convenience of popping a disk in and playing on your couch. But don't delude yourself into thinking that you'll get better performance and technological voodoo because, as my link shows, that's already not the case.
