Samsung's flagship phone is king of the Android market

Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KSC:005930) continues on its tear in the smartphone industry.  Nearly as profitable as arch-rival Apple, Inc. (AAPL) [1][2], Samsung is on pace to sell 390 million smartphones this year, an incredible number.

Early sales numbers from the Galaxy S IV are looking healthy.  Despite criticism over its plastic-body, strong marketing appears to have come through for Samsung.  The company's co-CEO JK Shin announced to The Korea Times that the handset will hit the 10 million unit sales mark next week, a mere four weeks after its global launch.

By contrast, Samsung's last-generation flagship phone, the Galaxy S IIItook seven weeks to hit that mark.

The Samsung handset had a rather bizarre unveil:

... but appears to be keeping pace sales-wise.  It should get another little boost on June 26, when an unlocked version comes to Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Play store, priced at $649 USD.

I've recently acquired one of the Galaxy S4's (North American I337 model). I do not see any lag whatsoever even with Samsung's bloat.

For those who got on the SGS4 bandwagon really early, there were some nasty graphics and battery performance issues early on.

Those have been addressed by an OTA update. My update actually came thru when I was at the store starting it up with my SIM card.

In comparison to both of my SGS3s (both of those are running Cyanogen 10.1) I find it every bit as smooth. The Android 4.2.2 base on my SGS4 is very stable and I have had no app crashes at all. My current battery life is actually about 20% better than either of my SGS3s despite having a much faster CPU, higher density screen and (in the case of the i9300) more memory.

The first OTA for the GS4 helped alleviate some of the lag issues for sure.

I'm running CM10.1 now though so I don't have to worry about it at all.

As usual with Android haters, every slight issue is a massive travesty.

The best is Mitch and his 8 cores rants, trying to equate obvious bugs in Samsung's TouchWiz UI with blanket proclamations about Android efficiency.

I guess ten plus million people didn't get the memo.
