Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 app store currently has about 145,000 apps
I want a Windows Phone.
I know that doesn't seem to be a popular statement. I've heard a range of complaints, spanning from the fact that Nokia's Lumia line is starting to look alike (the Lumia 925 and Lumia 928 are basically the same phone -- minus the aluminum vs. plastic bodies and different carriers) and that some people just can't get into the Windows 8 operating system.
But I think the No. 1 complaint is the Windows Store's lack of apps. Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 app store currently has about 145,000 apps, which is far below Apple's App Store and Google Play (each have over 800,000 apps a piece).
This worry was reinforced the other day when I read that the app store for Windows Phone 8 still didn't offer Instagram -- so Nokia went ahead and introduced a similar social camera app that allows users to post to Instagram as well.
The app is called
, and it was created by Synthetic Corp (which also created the Hipstamatic app -- an Instagram competitor). While Oggl isn't the real Instagram app (obviously), it allows Windows Phone 8 users to send pictures on Oggl to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.
Nokia introduced Oggl alongside the Lumia 925 last week, likely in hopes of bringing Instagram fanatics to the platform and increase sales of its latest WP8 hardware.
“We hear the voices on Instagram,” said Matt Rothschild, head of sales for Nokia in the Americas. “For now, we see great technology complementing Instagram; we are continuing to work on that.”
Oggl is currently invite-only, but you can request an invitation
Despite the app selection, I think WP8 is
a pretty solid product
. I wouldn't want Windows 8 for my desktop or laptop because I think it performs better as a mobile operating system for touch devices like smartphones and tablets.
Personally, WP8 has all the apps I regularly use (Spotify, Netflix, Gmail, Pinterest, Dropbox, Hulu Plus, Amazon, Groupon, Skype, Whatsapp, Zombies Run!, etc.) so I can't really complain. In my opinion, it's a matter of quality over quantity: it's more important to have key apps than
However, I hope Nokia doesn't have to keep creating knock-off apps to keep up with the big boys.
What do you think
readers? Would having apps like Oggl instead of the real deal Instagram take away from your mobile experience, and even deter you from switching to Windows Phone?
