*Lumia 928 is priced at $99 after a pesky $50 mail-in-rebate
Nokia's latest smartphone now officially has a date with Verizon Wireless: May 16. The new Nokia Lumia 928 packs in a 4.5" OLED (1280x768), a 1.5GHz dual core Snapdragon S4 processor, 32GB of storage space, an 8.7mp rear shooter with Carl Zeiss optics, a xenon flash, and NFC. The smartphone also manages to pack in a 2000 mAh battery.
Naturally, the Lumia 928 comes with PureView imaging and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in an effort to cut down on blurry pictures and improve nighttime shots.
The Lumia 928 is priced at $99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate (really, a MIR?) with a new 2-year contract. For a limited time, those who purchase a Lumia 928 will also get a $25 credit to use on Windows Phone apps and games.

It is really simple. What I'm saying is, only person I know that had to replace multiple phones was, in fact, responsible for that; wasn't phones' faults at all.
He did have some sort of insurance on them, so he got them replaced for free.
I've never heard of anyone getting 5 crappy phones in a row, and working in IT, I am surrounded with colleagues and customers with smartphones, few of them actually being new Lumias. Since we are IT support for our customers, pretty much all related problems with desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets get logged as support ticket with us first, through our ConnectWise, before being escalated with vendor (if required). If Lumia 920 is flawed design, we'd be dealing with NZ Vodafone and Telecom in endless loop, but that hasn't happened - in fact, I'm not aware of single issue with any recent WP8 device; for the record, all 3 smarphone platforms are behaving commendable.
All above mentioned makes me believe that Lumia 920 design and build quality are fine... which makes your father most unlucky smartphone user in the world, or at least strong runner-up. If true.
As of why would you make this up - how should I know? Brand loyalty. Having fun. Messing around. Like telling a story. People do all of that and many more.
I did quick-google around and couldn't find anything on Nokia pulling 920. There are new models in the pipeline as with any brand... but they seem to be regular yearly refreshments, not emergency replacements. Fell free to share the link if you have it - I'd be interested to read.

All I can tell you is what I know and have experienced, along with what the people at Vodafone have told us over the phone, unfortunately. Maybe I could ask for a copy of the conversation that is held for "training and quality purposes".
Bad phones (numerous issues) that have been seen by both Vodafone and Nokia, replaced, different SIMs tried, reset, updated, not updated...
All of which have had problems, and Vodafone(UK)/Nokia will no longer replace the 920 as they have had too many problems.
I still dont get why you equated the issue that your cack-handed, accident prone friend had to my situation though. If I had done any of those things, then what would be the point in writing a comment to tell everyone that I had failing phones because of obvious accidents that are not the manufacturers fault?
My mind boggles at the thought processes that must go on in some DTers heads.

Had some clarification from VOdafone.
It seems that they have a batch of 3G 920s that have been causing problems, which they will not replace any more. They'll only be sending out 4G 920s.
Customer services said no more 920s, renewals/retentions said no more 3G 920s
Sounds like 2 different parts of Vodafone aren't really sure what's going on themselves, so waht chance do I have :)
