Intel's Desktop Board Roadmap

A motherboard for everyone based on every chipset

Intel is expected to launch a dozen new motherboards based on the upcoming 965 Broadwater family of chipsets. The upcoming boards will be based on Broadwater G965, Q963 and Q965 chipsets scheduled to launch the last week of July. Also launching the last week of July is Intel’s Digital Home Bridge Creek platform which will also be named Viiv 1.5.

A microATX G965 based motherboard named DG965SS Shrewsbury will be the first Intel branded motherboard released. This board will be released in conjunction with the official launch of the Intel PG965 and Q963 Express chipsets. Intel Desktop Board DG965SS Shrewsbury will support LGA775-based Core 2 processors with 800/1066 MHz front-side buses. Four SATA interfaces, Gigabit Ethernet, integrated graphics and six-channel high definition audio will also be supported.

DG965RY Rogers City will be the ATX variant of the DG965SS Shrewsbury but launch the second week of August. These two boards are part of Intel Desktop Board’s Classic Series. Other Intel Desktop Boards launching the second week of August include two more G965 and two Q963 Express based motherboards. Intel Desktop Board DG965WH Westchester, DG965OT Stoughton, DG965RY Rogers City, DQ963FX Flaxton and DQ963GS Garreston motherboards will be introduced. DG965WH Westchester will be based on G965 and be VIIV compliant. It will support dual-channel DDR2-800, up to 1066 MHz front-side bus, integrated GMA X3000 graphics and one PCI Express x16 slot. Six SATA and eight-channel high definition audio are also integrated. A microATX variant named DG965OT Stoughton will also launch the same day. Features of the DG965OT Stoughton will be similar to the DG965WH Westchester -- including Viiv compliance. The DG965WH Westchester and DG965OT Stoughton are part of Intel’s Media Series motherboards.

Another pair of Classic Series motherboards based on the Intel Q963 Express chipset will also launch the second week of August. The DQ963FX Flaxton and DQ963GS Garreston boards will feature integrated graphics, support for dual-channel DDR2-667, up to 1066 MHz front-side bus, four SATA and Gigabit Ethernet. Not much detail is available on the Q963 graphics core yet but it’s expected it will be different from the GMA X3000 found in the G965. DG963FX Flaxton is a full ATX motherboard while the DQ963GS Garreston will be the microATX variant.

A week after the five ATX and microATX G965 and Q963 boards are launched, Intel intends to launch two more G965 based motherboards. This time around it’ll be two microBTX boards -- one Classic Series and one Viiv Compatible Media Series. The DG965MS Marble Springs is the Classic Series model that supports dual-channel DDR2-800, up to 1066 MHz FSB, PCI Express, Gigabit, four SATA channels and six-channel high definition audio. DG965MQ Mequon replaces the PCI Express x16 with a DVI output. Six SATA and eight-channels of high definition audio are also supported.

Intel will continue to be on a roll and release one more Desktop Board the third week of August. A picoBTX DG965PZ Pelzer will be Viiv compatible and feature support for DDR2-800 and up to 1066 MHz front-side bus. Four SATA, eight channels of high definition audio and DVI outputs are supported.

The first week of September introduces Intel’s vPro technology platform and the Q965 Express chipset. Intel will launch two boards in conjunction with the vPro technology platform and Q965 Express chipset. The DQ965WC Wescott and DQ965GF Guardfish will launch with vPro and Q965 and part of Intel’s Executive Series of motherboards. The DQ965WC Wescott is a picoBTX motherboard with support for DDR2-800, up to 1066 MHz front-side bus, PCI Express expansion, DVI video output and four SATA. DQ965GF Guardfish loses the DVI video output and adds two more SATA ports for a total of six SATA ports. Intel’s Active Management 2.0 technology is supported by both motherboards.

A third generation Intel brand, ATI Xpress motherboard will be launched the second week of September. The D103GGV Gem Valley will replace the previous D102GGC2 and add support for Core 2 Duo up to 1066 MHz front-side bus and dual channel DDR2-667. Previous features such as six-channel audio, integrated graphics and a PCI Express x16 slot will also be supported. The D103GGV Gem Valley is a microATX motherboard.

Bad axe

The article says nothing about the D975XBX2, the second version of the Bad Axe, except that it comes out in the second half of 06- I could have told you that.

Any information? What are the differences from the Bad Axe rev 304?

Kris! Come on man, that article doesn't say jack about the BX2. It tells you how to identify an newer BX that supports Core 2 from an older revision that doesn't.

I'm told the BX2 and the -304 BX are the same thing. Intel doesn't even have the board on its launch schedule.

No they aren’t the same, look the first slide, the XBX2 only has 6SATA and the XBX1 has 8, I've read somewhere too that the XBX2 will only come out late this year and will be featuring some enhancements for the new 2007 Intel CPU's.

"Currently, the Intel D975XBX (Bad Axe 1) rev. 304 boards out there can support the upcoming Conroe and even the quad-core Kentsfield since the board is based on VRD11 design guideline and both processors work fine with VRD11. As for thermal envelope, Conroe is 65W and Kentsfield is 95W. There is something down the pipeline on Intel Desktop Board roadmap that revealed D975XBX2 codenamed Bad Axe 2, the successor to the current D975XBX. We got to know that this board is specially made for Kentsfield where optimizations are done especially on the system bus to enhance performance. Seems like it will be the top choice board for Kentsfield before Bearlake chipsets with ICH9 come along in Q2 2007. We can expect this board to be available in Q4 this year."

You're right it’s still in development; however chances are that a quad-core CPU will indeed require some enhancements to be done on the motherboard or it will be bandwidth hungry in no time.

975XBX2 is NOT the same as 975XBX they are distinct boards. It's not a revision, it's a NEW BOARD.

Sorry Kris, you're reading this wrong.

Obviously you will review the 975XBX2 when it is made available.

The 975 boards are the only "power/xtreme" boards Intel are offering. 965 are too mainstream for my interests. Even then on 975 there are not so many PCIE lanes to play with.

I feel myself drawn in direction of 590 SLI for both Intel and AMD cpus.

Apparently the guys at XS have it running on 965 and 975.

There are nForce 5xx SLI motherboards, they just aren't manufactured by Intel like these.

I thought you would have focused on this subject,more in
detail-anyway-just for information

Intel has a cross licensing agreement with ATI,so only
CROSSFIRE is on board whilst SLI is OUT.Officialy SLI will
not be available.
I wish You could explore on this aspect,more in detail.
I personally prefer only DFI mobo-for me they are the best.
I prefer to wait for the DFIs

These boards are based on Intel's "Broadwater" 965/963 chipsets and will not support CrossFire. 975X will be the only Conroe chipset that supports CrossFire.

I believe the only way to have SLI is with nVidia chipsets.. since this story is about Intel chipsets - it is obvious that they don't have SLI.

But it doesn't mean that SLI is not available for Intel cpus - nVidia does has nForce 5xx SLI chipsets for Intel platform.

Going SLI doesn't equal going AMD. Look at Dell XPS machines.

So will boards with the new GMA X3000 have HDMI built-in? Will it be the new HDMI 1.3?? I forget whether Intel supports HDMI or if they're gonna try pushing UDI or DisplayPort instead.

My guess is that the ViiV boards with onboard video will have HDMI output, but I doubt it will be v1.3.

Anybody Else Notice This???

In the first slide, it clearly says that the some of the boards support Core 2 Duo at 1066MHz and 800MHz FSB, while a couple motherboards still in the planning stage only support Core 2 Duo at 800MHz FSB.

My point is: there are NO Core 2 Duo chips announced or even rumored to have a 800MHz FSB clockspeed. Did Intel just let slip the first mention of a second-generation, value Core 2 Duo offering?
