Microsoft says yes to HD-DVD and no to Blu-ray for the Xbox 360

We previously reported that Microsoft was prepared to support whichever standard left standing when the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD battle is finally over. Microsoft has now clarified the statement made by their Vice President of Marketing, Peter Moore, in regards to Blu-ray on Xbox 360.

Mr. Moore indicated at this year's CES to Japanese reporters that Microsoft was prepared to back whichever standard deemed to be the victor once all the dust is settled. Microsoft officials state that the company has absolutely NO plans to support the Blu-ray optical disc standard on the Xbox 360 and that HD-DVD has their full support.  In an official statement, Microsoft stands by their decision to support only HD-DVD:

Xbox 360 is a future-proofed system - one that allows us to add features as consumers demand them - as evidenced by our offering of the HD-DVD drive as an accessory. Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support are incorrect. At this point, we're fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats.
