Things still aren't great, but Nokia appears to be head in the right direction

Nokia Oyj. (HEX:NOK1V) has been on a wild ride.  For a time it was the largest maker of both smartphones (via its Symbian platform) and feature phones.  Then came its struggles to compete with Apple, Inc. (AAPL) and Android, and the decision to embrace Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Windows Phone.  The bold move seemed to only hasten Nokia's fall from grace on the market.

But while it's true that the Nokia of today is much smaller and less profitable than the Nokia of yore, it also appears to be returning from the brink and returning to growth.

In Q1 2013 it sold [PDF] a humble 5.6 million Lumia phones, up from 4.4m during the holiday quarter and 2 million a year ago.  To put that in context, rival Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KSC:005930) sold around 68 million smartphones in the quarter, while the low estimate for Apple's sales is around 34 million.

In other words, Nokia is still a small player, but it's seeing steady growth in its core Windows Phone platform.  True, 2 million sales is pathetic, but doubling your sales is still doubling your sales.

And Nokia's balance sheet is also improving.  A year ago it made €7.4B ($9.7B USD), but lost €1.34B ($1.70B USD).  This quarter it only made €5.9B ($7.7B USD), but trimmed the losses down to €150M ($196M USD).  That red may be troubling given that it made €202M ($269.0M USD) in total profit after tax last quarter.  But it's not as bad considering that this wasn't a key launch quarter for Nokia smartphone-wise and the holiday quarter tends to be more profitable for all OEMs.

The phonemaker did miss analyst targets -- the consensus target for revenue was €6.5B ($8.5B USD), while the loss was roughly in line with the ~€160M ($209M USD) estimate [source].

Shares in the Finnish phonemaker traded lower on the revenue miss, but that will inevitably turn around if the company continues to grow its Windows Phone sales.  Looking ahead, this fall's Windows Phone Blue will be a critical launch for Nokia.

In the meantime the company reportedly has a few devices up its sleeve.  It's planning a July refresh to the Lumia 920 that's thinner and lighter, and planning a more affordable version of the 920 for the autumn.  Also slated for July will be the long-awaited 41-megapixel Windows Phone version of the PureView device.

Financial Times reports that a phablet is also in the works, writing:

The device that can work as a phone and a tablet – known as a “phablet” – similar in size but with more advanced specifications to Samsung’s popular Galaxy Note.

This is a key emerging category -- Samsung is leading the way with the Galaxy Mega.  Nokia is likely eager to take a piece of the jumbo phone pie as well.

purchased Samsung ATIV S yesterday, gotta post some feedback here in coming months (retro/reclaimer/mototroll, watch out!), likely to drop android for good if this ATIV phone and WP8 don't fail too hard

no nokia for me 'cause their screens are too small

if ATIV S is good enough I'll purchase another one later for my wife and sell my galaxy note to some poor loser hehe ;)

p.s. actually purchased surface pro as well last week, maybe will post some feedback here too, maybe not, we'll see

"purchased Samsung ATIV S yesterday, gotta post some feedback here in coming months(retro/reclaimer/mototroll, watch out!),"

Watch out for what? I like WP8. It looks pretty decent to me and I never said otherwise. When you went on and on about thow BB OS 7 was great and was equal to Android and IOS and every bit as good I debated that strongly because your head was up your ass... Spouting idiotic things like "The blackberry trackball is an advantage over IOS and Android" ... Yes, and the horse and buggy is an advantage over the car.:P

At least now you have a good phone. Until you start to hate it. NOTE: You will start to hate it, not because there is anything wrong with it, but because you are a whiney beeotch. You Spouted how great your Blackberry OS 7 phone was until you dumped it. You Spouted how great your WP7 phone was until you dumped it, then you badmouthed it. You Spouted how great your Note2 was until you dumped it then you badmouthed it. Now you will surely spout how great your WP8 was until you dump it. You are too childish to work with technology, it obviously frustrates you. :P

hehe, optical trackball is still an advantage over iphone as well as bb7's larger screen (not _much_ larger than iphone's but was still larger!), so yeah for me bb7 was a bit better than iphone and was miles better than android 2.0

then android improved in 4.0 and wp7 started to look kinda crappy compared to it, so I tried 4.0 on galaxy note and if not for lags and freezes I'd probably use it forever, but then wp8 came along

time to bitch about crapdroid again? well maybe, we'll see how much better wp8 is compared to jelly bean on my galaxy note

Isn't it amazing that Pirks magically buys new devices featured on articles, JUST when it allows him to make some trollish "product X sucks" argument? Kind of convenient don't you think?

Next time he'll be saying his new Windows Phone sucks, and the iPhone 6 rocks.

Translation: I think Pirks is full of shit. He's not buying new devices every few months, he's just trolling.

I dunno. I'll take him at his word that he did buy those products. He's just a bitch. Also not bright enough to figure out the issue isnt with all of these phones that are lacking, the issue is the user... aka "Loser interface error".

Let's say I bought most of them including this Samsung WP8 device from yesterday, but it doesn't matter since I'm not basing my reviews on price. If phone is crap I say so not dependent on price. If it's decent I say so, and to be honest the phone prices are more or less the same these days, all flagship phones cost circa $600 w/o contract hence why even bother whether I bought something or not or how much did it cost? Maybe rural mototroll or redneckish reclaimer bother with a few bucks 'cause of their redneck inner self but that's not me!

Just because I value my money, doesn't mean I have less than you. If being a discerning consumer is "redneck", oh well, guilty as charged. You adolescent punk.

You obviously don't research ANY purchase. You must not demo ANY device beforehand. You just buy whatever apparently, then two months later claim it's crap. I've lost count how many times you've done this. Assuming it's not BS you've cooked up as a trolling angle, which I'm still leaning toward.

Retro nailed it man. The only common denominator in this is you. It's not the phones or their operating system, it's YOU!

" The only common denominator in this is you. It's not the phones or their operating system, it's YOU!"

It reminds me of a skit I saw somewhere a long time ago... It was themed something like this... "Are you having difficulty dealing with fiends and family? Having confrontations with co-workers and occasionally random people you meet on the street? Are you finding conflict in many different areas of your life? Well, its time to face facts... You're an asshole. It can't be everyone else, the only common factor is you" (then it went on to a self help type seminar on how to stop being an asshole). Reminds me of Pirks.

Exactly. It's like the psycho lady-friend you know (we all have one) who goes through men like tic-tac's. Finding some fatal flaw in all of them that prevented her from having a happy relationship, supposedly.

Hello crazy lady? The problem is probably YOU lol.

So you bought a phone without even seeing it in person? I've done that too, but i am not the guy who keeps being disappointed with all my purchases like you are.

Hey, serious question... I have to ask, after all that back and forth and you insisting that BB OS10 was miles above anything else out there, going on and on how great it was on the BB tablet, and how once phones were released on BB10 it would save RIMM... Now that the BB10 phone is finally out, why didn't you buy it?

RE: bye bye crapdroid, hello wp8

Because by the time BB10 arrived WP8 was around, and I wanted bigger screen so BB10 with its tiny screen was out of the question.
