In the coming weeks and months we will witness as Intel morphs into a slightly different company. I believe that the “good old boy” days are gone…
A Humbling Experience
Gone are the
days when Intel focused on market share dominance by doing whatever
they could to keep their competition at bay. Gone are the days when
Intel started a price war for the sake of crushing their competition
and assuming market dominance. Gone are the days when Intel publicly
ignores they even have competition.
In the coming weeks Intel
will lay off a significant chunk of staff while working to transform
themselves into the efficient machine they should have been a few years
ago. Maybe Mr. Paul Otinelli hasn’t had enough time in the saddle, and
perhaps people will look at his legacy as the one who turned them
around before it was too late – or maybe not. From where I am sitting I
see Intel making some positive moves. They should thank AMD for poking
them in the eye and beating them with a stick – it was a humbling
experience.
The “new” AMD has done everything they can to turn
their company into something spectacular, and it’s obvious that Intel
is learning from them. It’s more likely than not that over the long
term Intel will drop revenues and increase margins – something I admire
in any business.
AMD will continue to increase their market share in certain
segments – even in light of Intel’s recent epiphany. Although they will
have to submit on the high end desktop space - they can no longer be
the 100% owner of this space. The majority of their share gains will
come from those who don't currently sell AMD. From here on in AMD will
win business from companies who were once thought unlikely to adopt AMD
technology. AMD, under Hector Ruiz, has officially cracked into the
mainstream. Considering AMD is dwarfed ....
